As of late Polaris has never been able to find sleep, countless nights he had spent before lying awake at night and floating back to the memories of his lost wife. It had been months since she had died and he had been haunted by the memories of her. Some nights he would lay and wonder, 'Why couldn't I save her...? Was I too weak...?' these thoughts had flooded his mind for a the longest time.
One night as he shuffled around his bed, beads of sweat dripping down his face almost as if fever had overcome him, his eyes were tightly shut and in his sleep he muttered: 'Spiral...Spiral...'
In his dream he was back in his family house in the beautiful West Barton Countryside, the day was sunny with a few clouds in the sky, not too hot but not too cold the perfect day to a normal person's eyes. He was laying in the garden Spiral had always kept beautiful, with flowers of varying colors and hung in different styles. But this part of the garden was a place he had never seen before, a small patch of grass big enough for romantic rendevous surrounded by bushes of white flowers all leading up to an archway with roses growing into it, and to the outside the archway, a trail of cobblestones leading to him and his wife's secret lovenest, another trail leading back to the garden. Even as he lay with his eyes closed wearing his black long sleeved shirt, and black jeans, almost lifeless, and unaware of the presence that neared him. A familiar, warm energy he knew only so well, drawing closer to him. A silhouette of a young woman emerged from the archway leading from the garen, as she stepped closer to him more of her features came into view. Her long silver hair was pulled back into a ponytail but her hands reached behind her head and undid the tie, letting her hair roam freely across her back and shoulders, her violet eyes looking upon his sleeping form, a small tear coming to her eye as she knelt beside him. She was dressed in her white tanktop, short purple skirt, and a sun hat which she often wore for working in the garden. Her hand reached out to rest against his cheek her lips opening to speak:
"Polaris...wake up love." she said as she brushed a lock of his hair from his eyes.
Slowly, he opened his eyelids revealing the pools of sky blue which she loved so much, she smiled at this sight happy to be able to look into his eyes once more. The blurry image of his wife came into view slowly, Polaris then sat up and shook his head in disbelief...this couldn't be real, Spiral was dead, this was just an illusion made to trick him. She smiled a little and lay her hands in her lap.
"Surprised to see me...?" she asked, looking down at her lap.
"...it can't be...Spiral...?" he stuttered still unable to believe this was real, that she was really here with him in a place he thought he burned down.
She placed her hands an her hips and gave him that playfully pouty look he had always loved.
"Of course its me dork...who else would it be?" she said in a rather brisk tone before returning her hands to her lap, "Aren't you...happy to see me...?" she turned her face away from his tears welling up in her eyes as she sniffled.
He crawled over to her and wrapped his arms tightly around her, pulling her closer to him and squeezing her tightly trying to hold back from crying. She sighed lightly and lay her head on his shoulder closing her eyes, just enjoying his warmth, her tears dripping onto his shoulder.
"By the Gods...you're alive..." he whispered softly.
Spiral frowned and pulled herself from his embrace, Polaris' eyes widened in shock when she did, wondering why. There was a moment of silence, her back was to him, and despite his attempts to reach out and touch her, she just slapped at his hands.
"I've been watching you Polaris, watching you from the heavens...and I must say...I'm disappointed in you..." she paused for a moment, "And thats just using that term lightly."
"Disappointed?! Why would you be disappointed in me?" he asked trying to move himself around her so that their face to face, but to no avail she kept her back turned and her eyes away from his face.
"You know very well why I'm disappointed in you my husband...I've been watching what you've been doing with your life since the kids and myself died...this is not what I expected of you..." Spiral's eyes turned to look into his, giving him a stern almost angry look.
"What do you mean...? I don't have a clue what you're talking about!" Polaris retorted his brows furrowing into a frown.
"Polaris...you've been making life hell for others ever since you woke up from your sleep..." she replied, "Not only for others but you've made it worse for yourself...this was not what I'd expect from the selfless man I once knew and loved." she paused for a moment, "Polaris...what the hell has happened to you?"
Polaris gave a growl as he turned his back to her, his silver hair shifting as he moved.
"What does it matter what happened to me?" he began, "All I'm wondering now is what's going to happen to me once I fix everything on this planet."
"Thats the next thing I was going to question you on." Spiral grabbed his chin and turned his face back towards hers looking him square in the eye, "Why have you never told me about this...'ship' you so convieniently hid in our year of marriage?"
"I got sidetracked from my original mission once I stepped into Barton, I was originally going to repair it and return home." he replied.
"And...you never thought that 'I' your loving wife would not have helped you fix it." She asked.
"...it wasn't that at all..." he said turning his eyes to avoid her gaze but to no avail as she kept a strong grip on his chin.
"Then what was it...?" She growled low.
Polaris remained silent for a moment, at a loss for words, she could always get him to tell her anything, he knew this well enough.
"You...you kept me here...but now that you're gone...I've got nothing to stay here for...nothing to live for..." he muttered.
Spiral then pulled her hand from his chin and smacked him across the cheek with all her might, her anger plainly showing.
"Don't you ever say that to me Polaris...you know thats a ******** lie...and you know better than to say that to me." she took a moment to breathe, "How. In. The. Hell. could you EVER say something like that when you know its not the truth."
"Because it is the truth...I've outlived my usefulness...on this planet and in life...I'm supposed to live a short life thats the fate of the divine one." he replied as tears began to roll down his cheeks.
Smacking sounds could be heard from the garden as well as the cries of pain from Polaris, as the angry Spiral lay one final smack to his cheek. She look down on him how was laying on his side in the grass looking up at his wife's angry expression.
"Screw the destiny of your people Polaris....screw what others tell you and what you think you know about life." she stopped for a moment, "Because nothing you know about life is true. So don't think FOR ONE MINUTE that you can go get yourself killed...thats not what I'd expect of you...You once helped me alter my destiny...you helped set me free...I thought you of all people would practice what you preach...try to alter your destiny, I suppose I was wrong about that...wasn't I."
Polaris' eyes lay alight with fear and sadness as he look up at her. Unable to come up with an answer he closed his eyes and let the tears fall, blood dripping down from his lips, Spiral having done more damage than good.
"Thats what I thought...this is not the man I loved in life...the Polaris I loved never would have taken this path...he would never have chosen the dangerous road, the road that leads to his ultimate demise." she said, her voice shuttering now, the tears rolling down her cheeks now as she looked at him, "That was never the Polaris I loved..."
"The Polaris you loved is dead...he died with you...and what else is left huh? I'm only wanting to die because I want to be with you!" He closed his eyes tightly his voice going crackly and low.
"Do you honestly think thats what I want Polaris? For you to come to me a shamed and dishonored man who gave up on life just because he lost his family?" she scooted herself over to him, and picked his head up laying it in her lap her finger wiping the blood from his lips, "If you won't answer me...then let me tell you what I want...if you ever loved me at all in life, you would know that I'd want to live on, love despite the pain you're going through, do the right thing with your powers, help people...thats what I loved about you...the fact that you were so selfless was enough to make me love you...not some heartless coward whose given up on life...thats not you Polaris...and I know this better than anyone else...and do you want to know why?" she looked down at him as he turned his head to look up into her eyes, she leaned her forehead to his and whispered, "Because I loved you, I still love you...even in death...you've never truly lost me my beloved...I'm always..." she reaches her hand over his chest resting upon his heart, "...with you... in here...and guess what...that will never change..." she closes her eyes and silently cries, "It hurts me to watch you suffer like you are, and I wish I could be there to ease your pain...but I can't...so I need you to be strong for me...do what I loved about you...don't allow yourself to hang on to the pain, sadness, anger, and doubt...thats just life, and things like that come and go, but things...like the love that we shared, the family that we raised together, and above all else my heart being with you...is forever..." she said as she pressed her lips to his softly, but pulled away slowly looking down at him, wiping away his tears as she looked up at him. "Can you do that for me? Honor my dying wish...for your happiness...?"
Polaris stared up at her, the tears continuing to flow, his hand reaching up to rest upon her cheek, which she leaned into and kissed the palm gently.
"I...I will..." he stammered, "...I'm so...sorry...I've shamed you Spiral...shamed our love..." he said as he cried.
"No...you haven't shamed me Polaris...you've just strayed from the right path is all." she paused wiping tears from his face, "I just wanted to help you get back into the right direction is all...but I must leave you now..."
"NO...please no...don't leave me again...don't leave me alone..." Polaris sat up and cried, wrapping his arms around her in a tight embrace crying into her shoulder.
"You're not alone...or have you already forgotten what I've told you?" she whispered into his ear, "My heart, my love, and my soul are always with you...in your heart, you just have to believe in me, in yourself, and in us what we shared...and even in death...I'll always be with you." She pulled herself once more from his embrace and stood up, walking towards the arch she came through before but stopping just in the archway, "Go to the family home...theres something I left behind for you...in my secret place...please...don't forget me my darling husband...Polaris..." and after she uttered those words, she disappeared in a flash of light.
Polaris then sat up quickly in his bed holding his head, looking around the room for any sign of Spiral...but there was nothing to be found. Remembering her last words he quickly put on his coat and headed out into the front door, flying out into the starry night. Not long afterwards he had arrived at the burned remains of the old family home, his eyes began to scan the remains but he found nothing in particular. It was then that a glint of gold which reflected the moonbeams caught his eye, he ran toward it and began to dig through the ash and cinders, it was then he discovered Spiral's gold locket...one of the first things he gave to her as a symbol of his love for her. He smiled a little as his head turned back towards the starlit sky, hearing her voice in his mind:
'I'm with you Polaris...always...'
