when you're an artist
you notice all of the smallest mistakes
in all of your works
despite all of the praise you may gain from your peers
and as time progresses
i'm beginning to realize
that i am my own masterpiece

i may ultimately see everything that's wrong with me
but my friends
the people who can see me from the outside
are the only ones that really know the truth
they are the critiques
that fuel my creative processes
and convince me to wake each day anew
waiting to realize my full potential

even the mona lisa is falling apart
and i can smile at that
knowing that my mona lisa smile may not be perfect
but it is a mystery that might make any viewer
any day at any time ask a simple question
"what is it smiling about?"
or
"what does it mean?"

these are the questions that make every day worth living
and i realize now that sometimes
you have to ask yourself
why am i smiling?
or
what does it mean?
just to reassure yourself of the present
and remain in constant composure
knowing that you're not perfect
but that there is something out there worth smiling about
that something or someone today
has given you cause to be beautiful
to be wondrous
to be sensational

you were forged in the fires of passion
by two artists with the stroke of a brush
the brush of a cheek
and a stroke of momentary genius
and maybe only after revealing you
in all your circumstantial beauty
did they realize too late their errors
ever-so-slight that they might have been
and as these mistakes were viewed
they weren't seen as mistakes
but intentionally and painstakingly crafted
to one hundred percent perfection by the creator

in this way i see now that everyone is perfect
no two people are ever alike
no two paintings ever completely reproduced
and no two poems ever re-written
because even if you messed up somewhere along the way
your true admirers won't see them as mistakes
you'll be loved somehow by someone
somewhere along the way

and as brief as it may be
it will be the most amazing sensation in the world
