"No, you must let me go to him!" Vanessa screamed at the two guards holding her back. "Let go!"
"I'm sorry, my lady, but we cannot let you enter the monster's cave. It is far too powerful and you are far too important."
"I don't care, I have to go to him!" She struggled to break away.
The first guard squeezed her arm tightly. "Your lover is most likely dead by now anyways."
The sound of hard, quick footsteps could be heard from the cliff above the small group of townspeople who had gathered to see if the young man inside would live to tell what the creature was. All the people, Vanessa, and her guards looked up to see a young man with shaggy black hair and bright gray eyes jump off the ledge before the cave. Vanessa's emerald eyes brightened. "ROBERT!"
The man looked at her and gave her a smile. As he opened his mouth to speak, a large claw struck at him from the air, and pulled him back onto the ledge. A loud roar sounded from the entrance to the cave, soon followed by yells and screams of pain. The screams stopped as suddenly as they had begun, and all anyone could hear was the sound of tearing flesh. Another roar sounded but this time it was fading and echoing. Then somthing fell from the top of the ledge. Vanessa stared at the bright red mass before her. She soon recognized it as her suitor, Robert. Vanessa felt her blood run cold as she kept her eyes on his corpse. His beautiful black hair was sticky with his crimson blood. One of his arms and one of his legs were missing as well, and it appeared that they had been gnawed off by something with a lot of teeth. She tried to choke back a sob. "N...o...R-obert...Robert!" The two guards released her, she pulled away from them quickly, lifted her royal blue ballroom skirts a few inches above the ground, and ran to her beloved. She fell to her knees beside him, and touched his once fair face with a gentle hand. Tears filled her eyes and she threw herself over his mutilated corpse and began to sob.
"My lady?" The first guard spoke.
When she did not respong, the two gaurds hoisted her up. She began to kick and scream. "HOW COULD YOU!? YOU KNEW HE'D DIE! WHY DID YOU SEND HIM HERE!? I LOVED HIM! MY FATHER WILL HEAR ABOUT THIS!"
"You're father sent him here. Not us!"
Vanessa's eyes widened. "What!? But-!"
"It was His Majesty's orders! All I know is that he did it for you, princess!"
She felt her body become numb. I can't believe this...my own father...I-... She started to become angry. I must speak with my father about this...it can't be true...
"Take her home, boy!" The first guard barked at his subordinate.
"Yes, sir." The second gaurd saluted to his superious. He then picked up the princess, pulled her onto a horse with him, and headed toward the castle she called home. Vanessa turned her head and stared at the retreating bloddy mass of her once beloved Robert. The next few moments went quickly for her. Her once beautiful gown was soaked in blood...Robert's blood. As the guard helped her into the foyer of the castle, the other servants turned to the young princess in shock.
"My lady, are you alright?"
"What happened, m'lady?"
Vanessa's eyes remained hazy and distand as the guard continued to lead her to her chambers. When they reached her quarters, she spoke in a cracly voice. "Gazza..."
"Yes, my lady?"
She pulled away from him and stood on her own. "Arrange a meeting with my father. It is of great importance that I speak to him."
Gazza bowed to her. "As you wish, princess." He turned to leave. "If you require my services, do not hesitate to call for me. I will always be there for you if you are in need of comfort."
"Thank you, Sir Gazza." She disappeared behind the beautifully carved mahogany door leading to her room.
Gazza turned and stared at the door longingly. Your welcome, my dear princess... He gave a sad smile, turned, and marched down the hall toward the throne room.
Vanessa staggered to her four poster canopy bed and collapsed upon it's satin covers. Her long auburn curls spread outward and contrasted perfectly with the royal blue beneath her. She may have appeared to be tired, but in fact, she felt as if her heart were shattering within her. It hurt her so much as to even breathe. Father...did you truly send him to die...Please...say it isn't so...Father...you knew I loved him...how could you do this to me...your only daughter... Tears flooded her near lifeless emerald eyes. She tried to prevent her tears from falling, but to no avail. Crystal like tears streamed down the side of her face. Robert...I will find out what happened...I promise... She dragged herself to the top of her bed, and pulled a long gold cord that closed the royal blue canopy around her. But for now...I would prefer if I could be alone...just to let my heart break...
Working on this part right here, so here's what happens after the part that I'm working on.
She quickly covered her mouth, and her eyes widened. I can't believe this...my own father...would kill the man I loved... She opened her mouth to speak, but her voice could not come out. Vanessa swallowed and her voice returned. "Why!?" She choked out. "Father, why did you send him to the cave. You know he'd be killed! Everyone who dares step foot in that cave, dies! And yet you still sent him!?" She yelled loudly. Her father stared at her calmly, lowered his head, and looked back up at her with a determinede-fatherly look on his face. "My dear, Vanessa, I sent that boy to the cave so that he could prove himself. I told him if he went inside and came back alive, then he would be wroty enough for your hand in marriage. I wanted to protect you from making the mistake of loving an unworthy man." "You don't understand, father!" "I understand perfectly, my darling daughter." "I LOVED HIM!" She screamed out at the top of her lungs. Her father's eyes become sad. "AND YOU SENT HIM TO HIS DEATH! YOU KNEW I LOVED HIM, YOU KNEW THAT IF HE ASKED ME TO BE HIS BRIDE, I WOULD HAVE SAID 'YES' WITHOUT QUESTION, AND YOU STILL SENT HIM AWAY! " She took a deep breath and held back another sob. "Father...if you truly wanted what was best for me, you would have let me be with him. If my being wth him were a mistake...then it would be my mistake to make."
Another blank spot. sweatdrop
Her heart pounded in her ears as she ran down a dark corridor. Her soft footsteps echoed ahead of her, but behind her pounded another set of footsteps. The second pair was harder. Her eyes widened in fear and she ran faster. She lifted her many skirts 1 inch above the ground and tried to run faster. I can't let him catch me. I have to get out of here. She though to herself. As the corridor started to come to an end, she turned and ran through an archway and into the Grand Ballroom. She came to a halt at the top of a staircase to see that a huge hold had been blown through the wall, and the bodies of her family's servants lay scattered on the floor. Her legs buckled underneath her and she tumbled down the stairs. Cold, hard footsteps sounded from the top of the stairs, and she turned her head toward the sound. There he stood, the man who killed these people. He looked around and looked straight at the young woman lying at the foot of the Grand Staircase. He slowly started to approach her. As he did so, she forced herself into a sitting position and started to scoot away from him. Her dress wasn't as neat as it was at the beginning of the evening, now there were many tears in the silk fabric, and a bit of blood here and there. Eventually she backed up against a wall. She turned staring wide eyed at the wall and then at the man approaching her.
