Shading sucks, but I have two good reasons.
1. Pomeranians have a lot of fur and I did not have a lot of patience.
2. I never took art lessons so I know absolutely nothing about realism or shading.

It looks like you went smudge happy on the shading. The key to shading fur is: less is more. To add depth, having more lines to depict the edges of the fur is better than colouring and shading every. single. hair.

I thought you did an awesome job for not having an art lessons. Hell, I can't shade at all and I can never do animals or real life pictures.
