Chapter 1
You see, I wouldn’t really call my life normal. I see things that I can’t explain.
But Dad! I swear! There was a boy there! When he smiled he had fangs!
Courtney, there’s no boy. This is the fifth time you woke me up tonight. Go to bed.
It has been going on ever since I was three. The strange boy I saw standing in the corner of my room, he looked about the same age as me. He had pale ivory skin and turquoise colored eyes that almost glowed in moonlight. He had jet black hair that looked well conditioned and shimmered. He wore clothes that looked normal for any other kid.
He only appeared when there was a full moon out or when I was upset. Once, when I was nine and crying my eyes out (no one believed me when I said that a stone griffin waved at me), he got out of his corner, walked up to my bed, and wiped away my tears. Surprisingly, his hand was very cold.
“Don’t cry,” He had whispered in soothing voice, “I believe you more than the others.”
I blinked out my eyes, fighting back the tears forming, “Real—“
Then he was gone.
Before I go on about my friend I see at night, I should tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Courtney and I’m sixteen years old. I have black hair and an unusual, natural amethyst highlight. My eyes are also the same shade of purple. I wouldn’t call myself pretty, but I guess I’m average. I never had any friends, so I was often reading or drawing some of the things I saw.
Oh, did I mention I had a photographic memory? I also have the ability to draw the picture without opening my eyes, almost like printing from a computer. People think I’m crazy when I say I actually see these things so that explains my loneliness.
Anyway, let’s get back to the reality.
It’s a clear moonlit summer night. It’s about midnight and my friend was standing in his corner watching me with his brilliant turquoise eyes.
I sparked up every inch of my courage and sat up from my bed and looked at him directly for the first time since I was three.
Come on talk to him. If he was going to hurt you he would’ve done it by now! I was telling myself.
“Um…” I tried to sound braver than I actually was; I continued nervously, “If you are tired of standing, you can sit here with me.” I scooted over on the bed to make room for him, “Or if you want I could hop down stairs and get you a chair…”
He walked over slowly, clearing the space between us, and then sat cautiously on the opposite side of the bed.
Okay, here it goes. “Who are you? Why are you here?”
He tensed a bit and then relaxed, “Blake,” He said in a manlier voice than the one I heard before. He leaned closer and caressed my cheek with his cold hands, “As of why I’m here… I guess I would say to protect you. You humans are so fragile.”
“Protect me? From what? Wait, wait. You’re not human? Then what are you?” I spoke so fast I didn’t think he heard any of the questions.
Blake took a deep breath, “Yes, protect you. I can’t tell you what. You’re right about me not being human, but you need to figure out what I am.” He answered all my questions faster than I had asked them. He smirked and took his hand off my face.
Just looking at those stunning blue eyes got my heart beating. I felt myself blush. I wanted to do whatever he wanted.
Wait. Fangs, pale, cold skin, only appears at night, unchallenged charm. I knew what he was.
“You are going to think I’m crazy if I told you what I concluded.” Concluded? Nice job making yourself a nerd.
“Really? Well you are less crazy then you think, Courtney.” He smiled, slightly showing white teeth that were as white as his skin.
“Wait how do you know my—never mind,” I sighed, “Vampire?” As soon as I said the word I regretted.
He was silent for a couple minutes, staring into my eyes with a hard expression. It made me so nervous. I blushed and hid under the cover of my bed.
“You’re smarter than I thought,” I heard him whisper, “That’s a good sign.”
I uncovered my face to say something but he was gone again.
