“Hey wait up!” a kid called out to Darren an average vampire. As the kid ran up to him sweating and panting he wheezed out “You need to walk slower.” He wiped some sweat from his brow. “You and your damned vampiric agility...” he said as he finished the last of his water. As Darren jumped up into the tree Darren called out softly “C’mon Seth follow me, I see someone to feed off of”. So Seth jumped up into the tree but loses his balance but Darren catches him by his sleeve. “That was close eh?” Darren said as Seth sighs in relief “Yeah... Real close...”
They walk in silent as they follow a young boy that looks about 15. The boy realizes that they’re there but walks on as if he didn’t know. Darren and Seth start to close in on the boy then try and swoop down on him, but the boy swivels around and draws out a knife at the flesh of Seth’s throat. “Come any closer and he dies...” the boy said then Darren tenses a little as Seth is close to crying. Darren’s leg muscles tense up as he quickly jumps forward to try and grab Seth but the boy then slashes the knife against Seth’s throat. As Seth’s dead body falls limp to the ground Darren looks at him close to tears “Why..?” Darren said. “I told you… If you came any closer to me I would have killed him…” the boy said. “What are you…” as he said glancing down at the boy’s fingertips’ noticing ten tiny scars. “So your one also?..” the boy looks at the ten scars on Darren’s fingertips also. As Darren and the boy relax Darren asks him “What is your name?..” the boy glances down again then says “Steve...” then tosses the knife he had in a nearby river. “You shouldn’t have killed him...” Darren says as his eyes get watery. “You should have abided by the rules I set, I was on my way home… I wouldn’t have killed him if you hadn’t of bothered me...”
“But he never did anything to you…” Darren said letting trickles of tears roll down his cheek. “Whatever… Do you want some human blood or not?” Steve said “Sure…” reaching for the bottle of blood Steve had got out of his pocket. Darren takes off the cap of the bottle he notices Steve walking away, “Hey where you going?” Darren called out. “I told you, home, you can come if you like? There’s plenty of food and blood there.” Steve replied. As Darren finishes the bottle he rushes up to Steve and starts walking beside him as they walk to Steve’s house.
As they walk up the porch steps Steve lifts up the door mat and grabs the key under it and starts to unlock the door. As Steve opens the door to his house he invites Darren in first then follows after him. They walk into the dark house as a heavy scent of blood fills the air.
“Ugh! Why does it smell like this?”
“Yeah… Sorry… When you stay around it often you get used to it.”
“Is there anything that we can do to help mask this scent?”
“Not really… It’s all the bottled blood I have that does this.”
Steve flips a switch and a dim light turns on “Sorry, I don’t really like bright light.” They walk around the house as Darren gets to know it. Darren trips over a small table and grunts, “Ugh my eyes haven’t adjusted yet..” Darren says as he gets up. The house grows silent and Darren starts to get a little uneasy. “Steve?..” he croaked out “Are you there?” as a hand reaches out behind him and grabs his shoulder. Darren screams as he swiftly turns around but finds Steve holding out a bottle of blood for him. “Heh, little jumpy ‘eh? Steve chuckled. Darren grabs the bottle and drinks some blood out of it. After he finishes closing the bottle up he asks Steve “Do you live alone or with someone else?” Steve looked at him.
“I used to have a friend living with me, but some hunters killed him...”
“Oh... Sorry to hear that”
“It’s ok, I’ve grown used to it.”
They start to finish the conversation as Steve gets up to get another bottle of blood. When he heads into the basement he notices some of his stuff rearranged. He starts to tense up when he hears a crack behind him. He turns around slowly and faces eye to two vampire hunters. “Hehe, Hi ya little vampire…” the taller one says then pats the shorter one on the head. “Here’s your first taste of vampire hunting son.” He says as he jumps up and tries cutting Steve’s head off. Steve responds to that by swiftly dashing forward and snatching up the boy. “If you want him to live leave my house now...” Steve growls. The vampire hunter doesn’t respond, he just takes a step forward until he see’s Steve flex his nails and press them against the boy’s neck. “I said leave.” Steve growls more sternly this time and the Vampire Hunter relaxes and says “Fine…” and Steve leads them to the door. Darren has fallen asleep on the couch when the boy notices him and continues walking forward. When the Vampire Hunter and his son leave and Steve is sure there gone he heads down to the basement to make sure nothing is gone.
“Those little bastards…” as Steve looks at the empty spot where his vampire bible used to be, “I swear I’m going to hunt them down and kill them…” He reaches out and touches the spot bare spot where the book used to be.
