• Iunctio
    Part 1

‘The world of Today’, UniCor’s prime dictum. UniCor was the largest of the five corporations that controlled the world’s medicine, economy and the world’s superpowers (which was denied, we were told that the powers ran themselves).
UniCor’s prime directive was to ‘better the earth, better mankind, equal rights, equal minds’ they wanted people to remove any type of friendly or unprofessional titles and behavior related to workplaces or the public.
‘The world of Today’ was a very private place.

A train scraped along its rusted iron tracks, above my place of work. At approximately “one forty-seven…I hate that time, I hate that train, they are both aggravating” I whispered to Joanath my colleague.
Joanath was about five foot four, he was of African origin, he had black hair and brown eyes, he was always smiling like he was always thinking of something funny to say, but didn’t. As I think of him, he was my best ‘friend’ which was now known as a strange thing to say.
“Shhh, you know what the authorities are like in here” Joanath replied quietly and quickly, “don’t say that sort of thing out loud, okay?”
“Yeah I know, it just had to come out” my response became quieter as an Enforcer just walked by.

Four o’clock, the bell rang, everyone picked up their items, closed their computer systems, and walked out of the room. Joanath and I were the last to leave. We walked down a hallway which look as cold as they felt, right down to the grey box and the double doors I laid eyes upon everyday I worked. I pushed my Identification Card into the slot in the grey box, and stared into the UniCor logo which scanned my iris. The machine beeped twice which signaled the twin doors to open, Joanath did the same. We walked out into the streets; people were getting into their UniCor corporation vehicles and making their way home.
Others were catching the train, the old train system, “when are they going to get that system finished” gesturing towards the train as it moved off loudly.
“Hmm, I don’t know” answered Joanath truthfully.
“HEY YOU TWO, YOU KNOW THE LAWS” an Enforcer said whilst walking over to us, “you leave work when told to, you don’t talk to one another until you step firmly into your unit” he continued.
“Oh yes sorry sir, we were just, I was just enquiring about the train system…do you know when is it going to be completely refitted?” added Joanath with a smirk.
“Get into your cars, you can ask the admin that if you need to” the Enforcer walked off in the other direction.
As I sat down in my vehicle, and looked up at the buildings, the grey cement was coated by a grey metal, there was UniCor labeled everywhere. I looked into my rear-view mirror and saw the same face, I have seen for as long as I can remember. An olive skinned, gaunt, blue eyed man, with black short hair, buzzed to a length of number four and my mouth was thin and slightly turned up. My cheek bones were not as noticeable back then, but they were evident, my mother who I can barely remember used to tell me, that I was a handsome man.
I looked both ways then drove out onto the road.

The next day I was awoken from the constant ringing, I reached over and fumbled the phone about until I got a firm hold on it. I put it to my ear, “Hello, is that you? Its Joanath, I am going to be taken away, you will never see me again…”
    “What?” I interrupted,
“shh, I have to tell you, something, wait, when I was at work yesterday, I found a connection between, UniCor and the U.S government, and a design called, ‘Unconscious-Iunctio’. I cant say much, else, they are already on there way, but you almost lost your wallet, luckily I but it back in your car before we left work, unplug yourself, entirely, from every…” the phone line was cutting out, “power” once again it cut out, “goodbye my best friend” the phone went dead silent.
I panicked, I paced back and forth rubbing my hands through my hair, saying to myself that ‘this is not happening, a government conspiracy? No, not in our time’
I calmed myself, I walked out to my garage, opened the door of my car, looked in the left hand side door, there was my wallet, sitting in a groove, where paperwork is usually kept.
I picked it up, and examined it, nothing on the exterior had changed, it was still a firm, black leather wallet, with a golden triangle in the middle, with the name, ‘UniCor’ inscribed into the metal.
I opened the wallet, looked inside, nothing, missing, nothing new. That’s what I thought straight away, then I poured the contents onto the seat of my car, seventy-four dollars and a recite for an audio disc, ‘The Beatles compilation’. I thought that was it, until, a mini disc fell out, it was silver, and the size of a finger nail. I snatched it up, and returned to my computer. I sat in my chair, and thought, if they traced the call I got from Joanath then they maybe dispatched to my unit.
I put on my grey portly suit, took my wallet, car keys, all the money I had in my unit, I packed bags full of food, clothes and sanitary needs. I also took my SDEPA (Self Defense Electrical Pulse Apparel: a pare of gloves that have an electrical pulse running through them, in case of need for self defense) and my laptop with the mini disc.
I knew that I was going to have to say goodbye to my name, my life, my friend- Joanath.

Escaping into the forest to get away, from everything around me, was one of my favorite things as I grew up. Now this was the last time I was going to make that trip into the accepting place, I called home. That was the last time I felt the still, silent and carefree feeling that I called home.
I drove right over the bridge, out of the city of grey, the city of control, the city of privacy, and into the green plains and forests of compassion.
I took out all my items, and pushed my little grey UniCor company car, into the river. It started to sink into the motionless green river, and as the last grey, UniCor thing sank down unto the bottom of the lake, I felt a slight joy at the fact that I would be getting rid of that life once and for all. I’m not sure, but if someone was with me, they might have thought it was the best day of my life. I knew if I got rid of the car, they would not be able to find me nor stop me.

I walked down through the forest entrance; I walked for about half a mile, and then sat down. I took my lap top out and put the mini disc into the slot. A black box appeared on the screen with ‘Unconscious-Iunctio project’ with a small link labeled ‘open’ I clicked it.
It opened a program. There were a number of different links in the program, I clicked the one that read ‘function / ability’.
I read everything, the function was to create a certain period of time, where an AI (artificial intelligence) memory chip would take control of the consciousness of an individual, and complete tasks that are incapable for the regular human.
It would be used in the work place and even war. They were planning to take away our free will, to better the industries, but I knew, Joanath knew they would abuse the power that came with this project.
This file was not supposed to be seen by anyone other than the creator and The Presidents of the nation and UniCor. But Joanath came across it and he had been taken away.
I knew I must do something about this.
