• Chapter 1

It was almost the end of period 5, English class. The class had been handed a poem, and Sara Patton was reading the last sentence, “and as the rain cascades down my face, I realize the mistake I have made.”

Sara was not one of the most popular or beautiful girls in school. She had the average shape, brunette hair that reached her shoulders, glasses, hazel eyes and was the kind of person who loved learning, but sometimes slacked off.

She took her seat after reading the poem and Mr. Johnson, the teacher, commented. “Thank-you, Sara, for reading that poem.” Mr. Johnson was a tall teacher with short black hair, who usually wore a suit and had a radiant smile that attracted all the older women. “Now, can anyone tell me what the author was trying to say in this poem?” looking around the room he chose the class brain, Josh Henson.

As Mr. Johnson was discussing with the class, all Sara suddenly began thinking about Cody Bradshaw. “He’s such a bad boy.” she thought to herself. Sara had always had a crush on Cody, but didn’t know why. They were polar opposites of each other so why did she have a crush on him and not someone more like her? Someone like, Josh Henson. She turned to look at Josh, only to see him being smart again answering Mr. Johnson’s question. She was so lost in thought she didn’t hear a word Josh said.

Her best friend, Amy Mattonson, poked Sara in the arm and said, “What are you so lost in thought about?”

Sara snapped back to reality and said, “Sorry, but I can’t help it. Cody is so cute!” giggled Sara. “You can’t look me straight in the eye and tell me he isn’t cute.”

“I’m not saying he’s not cute, it’s just...”

“Ahem.” said Mr. Johnson, clearing his throat. “Did either of you ladies hear what young mister Josh said?”

“Umm, eat drink and be merry?” joked Amy, innocently. The class broke into laughter at her joke. Amy was the obvious class clown in their grade, anything she said could start the class into laughter, not to mention that Amy wasn’t too bad looking either. She had long black hair with her bangs brushed to the side, and a slim figure that got a whistle here or there from the other guys. She always suckered boys into doing her work with her flirting ways.

After that remark, Mr. Johnson said, “No, Amy. Now, if you two would stop gossiping and pay attention, please?”

“Yes sir.” mumbled Sara and Amy.

Mr. Johnson turned to Josh, and said, “Would you please repeat your answer, Josh, in case there were any others not listening.”

“Yes sir. The author was trying to say that you shouldn’t grab the first good thing you see. There might be others who might not look right, but they are.”
“Thank-you, Josh.” Just then the final bell rang, and everyone got out of their seats. Mr. Johnson quickly added, “These questions are due for tomorrow, and have a good evening everyone.”

After Sara and Amy had left the classroom Sara asked Amy, “So what were you saying before you were rudely cut off by Mr. Johnson?”

“Huh? Oh, I was saying Cody is cute, but he’s too much of a bad boy. I just don’t think you’re right for each other.”

“Why not? I can be bad!” snapped Sara.

Amy burst out laughing and said, “Ya, right!”

“Nice to know you believe in me.” glowered Sara. “Look I’ll prove that I can be bad. Ask me to do something.”

“OK, I dare you to trip Josh when he comes out.”

“You’re on!” agreed Sara with a handshake.

“Oh, and you can’t feel guilty or regret it after. You have to feel proud and willing to do it again.”

“All right.” Said Sara, standing beside the door.

“I’ll distract Josh when he exits, and you go for the kill. Got it?”

    “Uh, ya.”

Sara felt a little nervous inside because what if she got caught? She’d never been in detention before... Noticing Amy yell out, “Hey, Josh! Over here!” she realized that was her distraction so she stretched out her foot and watched Josh fall to the floor, all his books falling in front of him.

She walked over to him and said in a girly voice, “Oh, did little Joshy fall down? Here let me help you with your books.” and she kicked them down the hall. When she noticed everyone cheering for her, which was a first, she soaked up the glory, and felt on top of the world, until it all came crashing down.

She heard someone say, “Ahem.” behind her and turned to see the principal, Mr. Harder, standing behind her. She said innocently, “Oh, hi Mr. Harder. Lovely day isn’t it?” and she giggled innocently.

“Sara Patton, I am truly appalled that you, of all people, would do such a thing!” scolded Mr. Harder, indicating Josh picking up his books. “You are having after school detention, young lady. Come with me.”

As they walked down the hall, Sara pulled out her cell and text Amy, “I’ll get you for this.” a few seconds later she received a reply that said, “Ah, ah, ah! Remember, no regrets lol just remember after your detention come over to my house and we will work on those English questions together.”

Sara and Mr. Harder reached the office after Sara replied, “Ok” and put her phone in her pocket. She gasped when she saw who was sitting in detention.
