Chapter 5
The three teens walked over to Izzy’s house after school. She lived right by the school in a somewhat small house. It had one story (besides the attic), because it was still from when it was just her and her father. She missed that time before Frank. His mom, her step-mother, was just as bad. Izzy couldn’t imagine the amount of times her step-mother, Cathy threw her and her friends out of the house, because she was having her own friends over and they would be drinking. Luckily when they got there Cathy had already left for her 2 week cruise.
“The attic is right up these stairs,” Izzy said looking around to see if they beat Frank home, they did. When they got up there they started going through her grandma’s journals.
“Here’s one from when she was in… China. Is that before or after Egypt?” Lucy asked.
“It was the trip right before, so I think you have the right box,” Izzy said walking over.
“Whoa, she met the queen of England?” Lucy said disbelievingly.
“Yeah, after she found the ruins of a castle she got to meet her,” Izzy explained. “I think that was after she met George W. Bush. See here’s a picture of them.” Izzy showed them a picture of an old lady shaking hands with President George W. Bush.
“Who has a sharpie? This guy is lacking a curly-Q moustache,” Max said laughing. “No seriously.” This made everyone laugh.
“Here’s the journal entry from the day she found them, I’ll read it:
May 7th 2008,
Today I found 3 necklaces in the area of the temple. They appear to have no value, but there is something about them that makes me want to keep them. Right now I have to go work some more, but I will write more later.
Later that day:
I can’t believe it! I came back into my tent a few minutes ago to find that someone had ripped a hole into my tent and took one of the necklaces! It’s weird when I noticed it I could have sworn I heard a howl in the distance.
That’s it, the rest is torn off” Izzy said looking at the others.
Chapter 6
All of the kids looked at each other in surprise. They were all wondering what else had happened. At that moment Lucy’s cell phone went off. She opened it and found a text from her sister Lilly.
“Sorry mates. I gotta go let my sister in the house ‘cause she can never remember her bloody key!” Lucy explained heading towards the stairs. She was half way down the stairs when she heard someone downstairs. “Um, Izzy, are you expecting someone to come home yet?”
“No,” Izzy said finally remembering that since today was Friday Frank would be over his friend’s house for a sleepover. “My dad doesn’t get home until 5 and everyone else isn’t expected home today.”
“There’s someone downstairs though,” Lucy whispered.
“You guys stay up here I’ll go take a look,” Izzy said to Lucy and Max as she grabbed a baseball bat and headed downstairs. She got half way down the stairs and looked down into the houses living room. It was a mess! The coffee table, one of the bookcases and her dad’s favorite chair were all knocked over, there were papers everywhere and in the corner trying to open a filing cabinet was Mr. Griffin!
“Vath, get out here! Those necklaces might be in this draw but it’s locked and I can’t open it!” he called towards the kitchen. From the kitchen Mrs. Vath walked over to the cabinet.
“Let me try it,” Mrs. Vath said. She pulled out one of her bobby pins and tried to pick the lock with it.
Izzy ran back up the stairs and quickly, but quietly so as not to tell the teachers they were there shut the door. “Our teachers broke into my house!” she whispered to Lucy and Max. “I think they’re trying to find the necklaces! We’ll have to climb out the window.”
Lucy went over to the large window that opened into Izzy’s small backyard that consisted of a rusty swing set, an overgrown garden and a hole in the ground that suggested the existence of a kiddy pool some years ago.
“It’s a pretty long drop,” Lucy said nervously.
“We have no choice unless you wanna pass Mr. Griffin and Mrs. Vath,” Max said trying to persuade Lucy.
“I’ll go first,” Izzy said walking towards the window. She swung one leg over the windowsill, and then the other and pushed of the side of the house with her eyes squeezed shut. There was a blaze of light and all of a sudden Izzy was floating in midair. She opened one eye and noticed that she hadn’t hit the ground.
“How in the world are you doing that?” Max asked in disbelief.
“I don’t know!” Izzy said turning around.
“Bloody hell, you have wings! And they’re made of fire!” Lucy almost screamed, but she remembered the teachers were downstairs so she just whispered loudly.
Izzy started freaking out thinking that her back was on fire, but when she realized that she didn’t feel any burning that she actually had wings made of fire. She lowered herself to the ground and looked up to the others.
Lucy looked nervously at the ground, then Max, then the ground again. She was scared of heights, but she didn’t want Max knowing that. Before she could think about it anymore she jumped out the window. She expected to land hard on the ground, but by pure instinct landed on her feet.
“How did you do that? You were about to land on your back and you landed on your feet!” Izzy asked.
“I could be asking you the same bloody question!” Lucy exclaimed. She then remembered that Max was still up in the attic.
Max was just climbing over the ledge when Mrs. Vath walked into the attic.
“King, the kids are up here!” she yelled out the door. Then she noticed the “wrist band” on Max’s wrist. “They have the necklaces!” Max heard some one pounding up the stairs and just jumped out the window. As he fell he yelled, but his yell eventually turned into a howl.
Izzy acted quickly and jumped into the air bringing her wings back out. She flew fast and caught Max before he hit the ground. When she landed with him he muttered thanks.
“No time for that now! We have to get away from the teachers!” Izzy yelled. They ran to the front yard and stopped. “Where should we go?”
“My house, since I’m new to the school those blokes would have to get through a lot of paperwork to get my bloody house address!” Lucy said running the way towards her house. Max and Izzy followed her constantly looking back. The teachers were running after them, but since they were, well, middle aged they were far behind.
