Prolouge.

Empty. That’s all she ever felt, hunger coursed through her, it was part of her life. Homeless, helpless, that was what the townsfolk called the girl who was there one second and gone the next. That was how Violet lived, she was a ghost, a child who never existed but was there. She was noticed but never acknowledged, the little girl in the shadows. Innocent, focused, smart, all Zyad thought as he watched her pass through his family’s backyard, watching, silent, she didn’t even rustle the leaves. He was confused, why was she there? He blinked and only just noticed her as she swung herself over the fence by the tree that grew next to it. Who was Violet? Zyad did not think she was as helpless as the town believed.

Eyes of a different colour.
Violet’s feet made a small thump as she landed on the other side of the fence. She had, had to take that shortcut because she had attracted the attention of one of the merchants in the town. Slipping down the fence, she bit into the apple she had ‘borrowed’ from the merchants stall. Its juices poured over her hands and she smiled in contentment. No hunger for her tonight. Suddenly Violet's ears pricked up at the sound of approaching footsteps. Violet jumped up immediantly, gripping the half-eaten apple in her hand as though it was the key to keeping her alive. She ran as fast as she could, she reached the dirt road but her callused feet weren't hurt by it. Until she stood on a sharp object jutting out of the ground.
"Ow!" Violet cried, tumbling over, the apple fell from her hand and Violet immediantly scrambled up and grabbed it.
"Hey are you alright?" The voice was full of concern but Violet didn't trust it. Her foot throbbed and she didn't want to move it.
"You have something in your foot." Violet looked up and saw a boy around her age, kneeling down and examining her foot. She sat up slowly looking at her foot herself.
"It's gone pretty deep in." Violet observed, speaking as though it wasn't her own foot.
"Der! Your foots pretty dirty, your at risk of serious infection. We need to clean it up." The boy up at her and behind the dirt on Violets pale face her cheeks turned rosy. Zyad had short blonde hair, that fell over icy, blue eyes. They gave the illusion that they were frosted over. The boy was slightly tanned and Violet thought he was the boy she saw around the market sometimes, shopping with his parents.
"Your coming to my house." The boy cried, grabbing her hand he pulled her on to her feet and supported her as he started pushing her to his home.
"I don't want to go into a house!" Violet exclaimed. Her voice was level, as though she was talking without feeling any emotions but inside her fear and anger was through the roof. SHe didn't want to go inside, the last memory she had of being inside a house was the night she had discovered her parents with big chunks missing from them. SHe couldn't help hsuddering at the memory and it didn't help she didn't know the boy supposedly trying to help her. The boy stopped and lowered her down softly.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." He said sitting down next to her.
"My name is Zyad. I'm an orphan but I was taken in by The Tremmley family." Violet smilied at him.
"I'm Violet." SHe muttered and when Zyads face didn't turn sour she smirked.
"Ghost Child." She added with a smirk, expecting him to turn away from her, spit at her feet and pretend he never met her.
"Your the Ghost Child. The Tremmleys talk about you but they act like your the devil spawn. Your not so bad." Zyad grinned at her and a small smile appeared on Violets face.
"Hey you look good with a smile." Zyad said with another ear to ear grin. Violet smirked and probed her foot.
"Ok blondey I trust you." Violet muttered reluctantly. Ever since her parents were murdered Violet hadn't trusted a soul but there was something about Zyad, something that pulled at Violets soul. He was a person she was going to have to trust with her life.
"Don't call me blondey." Zyad muttered still with a grin on his face as he once again supported Violet. They stumbled together down the dirt road and into the house that Zyad had just vacated. Violet started trembling as her eyes fell on the loungeroom and she felt Zyad wrap his arm around her. He didn't know why she was trembling but he understood she was afriad.
"Come on the bathrooms this way." Zyad said pushing her down the hallway. He lead her to a pure white room and turned on the shower.
"I'll go and get some of Mrs. Tremmleys old clothes, they should fit you perfectly." Zyad looked her over and with a smug smile left the room, closing the door behind him. Violet stumbled into the shower, she scrubbed herself clean, paying speacil attention to the foot with a peice of glass sticking out of it. After she had turned the water off Violet gripped the shard and yanked out of her foot.
"Ouch!" She cried out as a pool of blood appeared on the bottom of her foot. She grabbed a few peices of tissue from the cuboard beneath the sink and dabbed it.
"Clothes are outside the door!" Zyads voice sounded muffled through the door but as Violet cracked open the door he was no where to be found. She grabbed the clothes he had given her and disappeared into the bathroom once again. She pulled them on, surprised at how well they did fit her, even if they were a bit loose as she was skin and bone. She looked over her body, at the knee high pants she was weaaring and the tight, black shirt that felt different to the shirt she had worn since she had been 8. Now 14 Violet looked at herself for the first time since then. She walked over to the mirror and really looked at herself. Violet was even more pale than she had thought, in fact her skin resembled a night when the moon was full and not a cloud was in the sky. Her lips was a pure red but kinda cracked. She had high cheek bones and her eyes were of an irregular colour. Violet frowned, she didn't remember her eyes being purple and black. They seemed to twist around like a cyclone.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door.
"Are you ok in there?" Zyads voice once again reached Violets ears and she ran to the dor. She yanked it open, a grin on her face. She looked at Zyad and tilted her head. His mouth was open and his eyes were as wide as saucepans. Violet had never been gawked at before and didn't know why Zyad looked that way.
"Zyad!" She cried clicking her fingers in front of his face.
"Huh?" He questioned shaking his head, he grinned at her and took her hand pulling her into the loundgeroom again. She hugged herself and gave a weak smile to Zyad.
"Hey when did you lose your apple?" Zyad asked. Violet's face fell as looked around for her half eaten apple.
"Never mind I'll get you another one." At that Zyad disappeared into another room and left Violet in the room she feared most, Violets parents had been discovered in the loundgeroom and she had been discovered cowering in the corner of the room. Now Violet knew why the adults had freaked when she looked at them. It had been her eyes. Violet jumped as a clicking sound came to her attention. She stood up as quietly as possible, staring at the other door in the room. Judging by the light behind it Violet believed it lead to outside.
"Zyad?" Violet whispered, she tried to raise the volume of her voice but something stopped her. Then the door opened and a Violet stumbled back as she realised who it was.
"What are you doing in my house!"
