Nicolle sat quietly in her seat at school. Her eyes staring at the white board blankly. Is Chris okay? I wonder how the test results came out. Man, when will this period end?! She felt a small vibration go off in her pants pocket. She knew what this met. Nicolle quickly swung her phone out and answered, not caring what her teacher Ms. Simmons had to say about it.
"Mom! Is Chris okay? What were the res-..." Her words slipped away as she heard her mother crying on the other end. "Mom?" she whispered. "He's alright. U-Um, he's on top of the list for a doner sweety. Don't worry! We'll s-see you at ho-ome al-lright? Love you..." The phone disconnected.
Nicolle's hand shook, her eyes wide with terror at the news she already knew would come, but didn't believe it would be this soon. "Ms. Rogers. You know what I say about phones in my class! Give it here." Mr. Simmons strode over beside her, hand out for Nicolle's cell phone. Nicolle rose slowly, her arms swinging lifelessly by her side, the phone slipping out of her hand and crashing to the floor. They said it would be in a year or two. Not months! A small tear rolled down her face.
She gritted her teeth and bolted for the door. "Ms. Rogers!" she heard Ms. Simmons yell behind her; but she didn't care. She ran straight for the exit doors. Nicolle bolted out into the open air, rain hitting her in the face. Run! Just keep running!
She bolted down the sidewalk, straight towards her home. Her breathing came out in painful gasps; but her mind traveled back to the horror of her brother dying. He's so young! God take me instead! I beg of you! Take me!
Nicolle took a sharp corner and slipped. She gasped as she felt the force of the fall. She pushed herself on her knees, tears flowing from her blue eyes like a river. She held her hand to her mouth to silence the screams of sorrow that rose from her very soul. "Why? Why him!?" Nicolle clenched her hand and laid it over her heart that was slowly breaking. She walked forward, her hair clinging to her face in strands.
She walked for a long time til she saw her home, her mother's car parked in the driveway. Nicolle trotted forward, slamming the door as she entered. "Nicolle what in heavens?!" she heard her mother speak; but Nicolle couldn't grasp the words that she spoke. She ran up the stairs and straight into her brother's room.
Chris was sitting on the corner of his bed, green eyes dazed, face pale. He looked up in surprise as Nicolle approached him. "Nicky, what the..." Nicolle launched forward, grabbing him and pulling him in a tight embrace. She let the tears go, holding back the fear, and frusturation. I'm supposed to be the strong one... She could feel Chris gently pat her on the back. "I'm okay sis. I'm tough, you got nothing to worry about," he murmured. She felt a teardrop fall on her neck and felt Chris's body shake with nerves. "It's my job to worry..." she whispered.
