• 1. Sorry, I don't understand. I speak Klutz.

I’ve got four words for you: First. Day. Of. School. This isn’t the ‘first day of kindergarden when your “Mommy” walks you into your classroom and you’re all shy and you want to’ cry situation. My mom isn’t with me and I’m going into the mid-semester of my junior year. So, in a way, you could say the two first days are quite similar; it’s absolutely horrifying and I feel the need to hide in a dark corner where no one can see me. (And although this may sound a bit melodramatic, I just WISH someone would come and save me from my death.)

I looked out my rainy windshield to see the sign:

    Forks High School
    Home of the Spartans

Yup. Forks, Washington. Strange name? Yes. It’s just a small, rainy town in the Olympic Pinensula. So, nothing special, honestly. Is it the place I imagined I would spend this year in? No, I didn’t want to be here, but it was my sole decision.

“Bella, sweetie,” my mom, Renee, had told me. “You sure you don’t want to stay with Phil and I?” Phil’s my mom’s boyfriend. He’s a minor league baseball player and he travlels a lot, something I don’t enjoy.

“No, mom.” I had answered. “It’s about time Charlie and I spent together. I’m looking forward to Forks.” I lied. Charlie, whom of which is my real Dad, lives in Forks. He’s chief of police in a small, rainy town. Everyone would know me, and would say things to me, words, to me. The attention I had never gotten and never wanted, it was too strange to grasp. But I’ll live with it, I thought.

So I, Isabella Marie Swan, did choose Forks. I chose it over every other single sunny city in the U.S. Great choice for a Pheonix native to live in a rinky-dink wet town, huh? Not really.

I pulled my old Chevy into a parking place next to a quite shiny silver Volvo. It was the only nice looking car (besides the Jeep right next to it) in the whole lot. My Chevy naturally contrasted the vehicles beside it, making me feel even more uncomfortable. I dragged me feet to the brick building that would be my new school, avoiding curious glances from passerbys. I would obviously be the spolight of the year, with everyone in my face asking for my name and what not. You should regret this, Bella.

I walked into the administrator office to get my schedule for the semester. I stepped to the front desk, and being my clumsy old self, I tripped on my way. I grabbed the counter before I could fall, blushing wildly.

“Careful, hun.” The lady said. She was wearing a rather purpleish dress that made her bust-job very noticable, about a ton of makeup, and her hair was in an updo that quite resembled a beehive. I glanced at her nametag, and it read MRS. COPE. I couldn’t miss the flashy diamond ring on her left hand. So you’re the new Mrs. Cope, huh?

“What can I get you, hun?” She had a heavy New York accent, and she was chewing gum as well. Now, tell me, why would a nice lady like you move to from New York to Forks, by all means?

“Can I get my schedule? Isabella Swan.” She shuffled through some papers and pulled out a couple.

“Here you go.” She said with a grin, showing her whitened teeth. “And welcome to Forks.”

I nodded and walked out into the hallway, wanting to shrink to a microscopic size. Everyone stared at my direction, happily chatting away. Probably about me, the new girl, which was a fact that made me want to scream. I had Trigonometry first with Mr. Varner, which was in hallway D, wherever the hell that is. I walked around like a stupid idiot, craning my neck every way it could turn.

“I could kill for a map.” I muttered. I walked around helplessly, waiting for a bell to ring and time to murder me. I avoided all of my obstacles: trashcans, people, walls, STAIRS, which I did pretty well. Well done Bella, well done.

I should learn not to jinx myself.

BAM! It hit me like a fist in the stomach, because the football really did hit me in the stomach. I gave out a sharp “Oof!” and the football bounced to the floor. Much to my dismay, my right boot stumbled over the ball and I landed on the ground headfirst.

Before I could even think about the recent events, someone pulled me up, making that someone grunt. What a great way to help my self-conciousness. I looked at the person who helped me.

She had a tiny frame and short, spiked black hair. I actually had to look ever so slightly down at her. She was so small. She was also beautiful, which made me want to disapear.

“Are you okay?” she asked me, picking up my arms to se if I had any bruises. It’s not like I fell down the stairs. But that also could’ve happened, I thought.

“Yeah.” I lied. Actually, my lip was throbbing and I had a headache. But I didn’t want her to go all “Renee” on me.

“Sorry ‘bout that,” she apologized. I looked at her expression deeply. Her blue eyes told me she really was sorry. I smiled.

“Emmett can be a real butt sometimes.” She said. I looked over into another hallway and saw him. Holy crow, he’s huge.

“He’s my brother. By the way, I’m Alice Cullen.” She stretched out her skinny hand towards me. I grabbed it and we shook.

    “Bella Swan.”

Alice grinned real hard, which sort of frightened me. She looked like she had a gazillion plans for me that she never got to use for anyone. I wonder why…

“We’re going to be BEST FRIENDS!” she squealed. My stomach dropped about a million feet when she said “BEST FRIENDS”. I’ve never really had one before.

She grabbed my arm and pulled me away, probably clueless, but not caring, where to go. I was having a great ‘friend moment’ until I realized I didn’t have my stuff.

    “Oh! I forgot my-“

Before I could turn around to search for my bag, Alice had already grabbed it and slung it on my shoulder. She glanced at my schedule, too.

“Whoa there, Alice, I’m not suffering from any serious illness.” But it was kinda nice for her to do that for me. She ignored me.

“Great! We both have Trig together, and Math!” she squealed, once more. Are you a pig or is that just you’re thing?

“Oooh!” she exclaimed. “We also have Lit together, and you can sit with me at lunch!”

2: Sometimes Fruit Ain't Worth It.
So far, my day wasn’t as horrifying as I assumed it would be.

Alice and I talked the whole time in Trig and Math. She asked me about cute guys and whom I liked. I told her nobody, and probably never anyone, but she said she has her eyes on Jasper Hale, and that I can’t have him. Don’t worry about me, Alice. I won’t get in your way.

It was time for lunch, and Alice practically ran me to her table. She just skipped, thankfully. I didn’t need more embarassment.

Alice sat next to a curly blonde haired boy with blue-grey eyes. I assumed that was Jasper; Alice was already kissing him and all that. Gah. Emmett was next to a wavy blonde haired girl, and she was beautiful. She had a light blue tunic on with silver knee-length leggings and the same blue of her dress pumps. That was Rosalie. Alie told me that she and Emmett wer inceperable. They were at eachothers hips. So, what am I, a pile of fish guts?

I waited for the fruit-bar to get a smaller line, and when it eventually did, I stood up. A lot of other tables started laughing. My face immediantly got hot. Was I missing an item of clothing?

Then I realized they weren’t laughing at me.

    And I saw HIM.

    His messy bronze hair.

    His VERY noticable green eyes.

But one thing stood out the most.

He was on the floor, and three guys stood over him, kicking him wherever they could. I saw something red coming from his cheek. Oh my God. Who were these people?

I heard a chair behind me scoot out. I turned around to see who it was.

Emmett was already heading over to the scene, and Alice was covering her eyes while Jasper comforted her. Rosalie just glared at me. What’d I do?

I turned back to see what Emmett was doing. I saw the three other guys laughing, and the boy on the ground got up and just left. I watched him as he walked to an empty table in the corner; just sitting while the blood came from his face.

Meanwhile, Emmett seemed to enjoy himself by picking up the blonde guy of the three by the collar. He threw him to the ground, asked the others something I couldn’t hear, and then walked to the bronze boy. I felt something wet on my face. Was I crying for this boy? It was maybe one tear, but I had emotions for him. Sadness. I couldn’t realate to his pain at all, but I felt it.

The boy just kept shrugging Emmett away, and then Emmett gave up and sat back at our table. I decided getting my fruit was a bad idea now, so I sat too.

Nobody said a word. I desprately wanted to break our awkward silence, but I couldn’t think of anything to say. I just sat there and stared at my food like everyone else but Emmett. He furiously ate his corn.

“That’s Edward. My other brother.” Alice finally whispered. I nodded.
“It’s so immature, how those boys treat him,” she continued. “Mike, Eric and Tyler, the boys who were beating him.” She frowned and looked down. “It’s like a game to them. Hurting Edward happens all the time. Sometimes dad has to help him. He’s a doctor.”

So Edward was bullied constanly and sometimes in need of medical assistance? I looked over at him. He met my gaze, and I could almost see curiousity in his expression. But then he just glared and looked down, kicking an empty chair beside him away. I bit my lip.

And in my head, my thoughts were on him. I begged for the image of him being hurt to leave, but it was really the only memory of him that I had. I didn’t like the memory, but just having one of HIM in particular made me happy. And that was strange to me, and I just wanted to shake my head and somehow the thought would just float away to nowhere.

But I’d remember him just for now.

    I’ll remember Edward.

    God, I’m so cliché.

3: Emo Boys and Their Pens.

After my most unappetizing lunchtime, I shuffled off to Biology. Alice, sadly, wasn’t in that class with me, so we spilt and I went alone. I remembered my jinx earlier that led me to meet Alice, but right now I wanted to shout, “HOW CAN THIS GET ANY WORSE?”

    With my luck, it did.

When I entered the Biology room, every seat was taken but one in the back. And guess who was sitting there?

    You know EDWARD.

My stomach dropped another million feet, the second time today, when I saw him. I watched him glance around the room, up at me, and then he just pulled his hood over his head. I’m sure that’s against schoold rules, but why would he care? He’s the one that suffers.

I took in one sharp breath and walked to the empty seat, and it felt like hours just getting there, but it probably only took seconds. Edward had his notebook open in front of him, but he wrote nothing. He just stared at it as an excuse to not look at me. That hurt me.

Mr. Barker came in and started talking, but I didn’t pay any attention. I just looked at Edward, taking in all of his sadness and pouring it into me. He whipped his head towards me.

“What’s your problem?” he hissed. I was taken-aback by his comment, but I was also shocked that he even spoke to me. I didn’t know what to say.

“Er-“ I managed to get out. What could I say? He still had a cut. Maybe…

“How’s your um…face?” I asked. “It looked bad.”

Edward smirked, but it seemed more sarcastic than amused.

“Doesn’t matter to me.” He shrugged.

    “It didn’t hurt?”

    “Happens all the time.”

I frowned and stared at the board. It said something about the “Krebs Cycle”. Been there, learned that.

“How’s yours?” he asked me. At first I wasn’t quite sure what he meant, but then I understood. The “football fall”.

    “You saw that?”

    He smiled.

    “Who didn’t?” he replied.

I opened my notebook and took some notes I didn’t need; I had nothing else to say. But Edward wasn’t finished.

“How’s Forks doin’ for you?” I shrugged.

“Okay, I think. I’ve made a couple friends. You know, like Alice. That’s a start.” I paused. “But some of it’s a little…not good.”

Edward turned to me. His face was sarcastic, pretending to be interested.

“Really?” he said. “How about that. We have something in common!” He gave me a fake grin and then turned serious.

“So you don’t like it here.” It was more of a statement then a question.

    “Sorta.”

    “Hmm.”

We stopped talking for a bit, adding an awkward and tense silence to us. I started to draw spirals with my pen, bored. I decided to say one more thing.

    “Sorry. It must suck.”

Edward bowed his head at his blank notebook and sighed.

    He didn’t respond.

And then I knew I didn’t need to say anything more. Edward ended our conversation with silence, and I resumed my doodling.

“It’s like a game to them. Hurting Edward happens all the time. Sometimes dad has to help him. He’s a doctor.”

I heard Edward sniff. I looked at his notebook page.

    It was wet.

    Aww.

I sighed and glanced at the clock. Biology was almost over, so I started to put away my things. The bell rang and I started to walk out, watching my every step so I wouldn't fall. All of a sudden, someone yanked my bag.

“Give it back.” It was Edward.

    “What?” I asked, very confused.

“What do you mean ‘What?’” he replied, very demanding and slightly scary. I started to get annoyed with him.

“I mean ‘What?’ as in what the hell do you mean?” We were out in the hallway where everyone could see us. Crap.

    “My pen.”

“Your pen?” I asked, getting VERY annoyed. “I don’t have your pen.” Edward snorted. What? I only had my pen.

    “Prove it.”

I took out my pencil case and opened it up. All I had were two black pens. The only difference was that one had the words dEatH cAB foR cUtIe inscripted on it. Oh.

(THE DIVIDER BELOW IS NOT REAL!)
“Shoot.” I whispered, my cheeks starting to get warm. Edward was glaring. I handed him his pen.

“I must’ve picked it up on-“

“Mhmm.” He cut me off, using a very sarcastic tone again.

“Next time, don’t take my ‘stupid crybaby emo’ stuff.”

    Then I started getting frustrated.

    “I didn’t say it was-“

    “Shutup.” He said firmly.

    “I didn’t say you were-“

“You didn’t say I was emo. Right. Shutup.”

    “Stop interuppting me!” I snapped.

“What’d I tell you to do? Shutup.” He repeated through his teeth. People were looking. This is all over a stupid pen?

    “I’m not going to-“

But Edward was walking away, leaving me alone. Then, seeming to change his mind, he turned back towards me.

“And stay away from me.” He said. “I’d like that.” He walked away again, and didn’t turn back at all.

    Forget you, Edward.
