the march
I woke up to the sound of gunfire. I crawled to the window and peered out, a bullet whizzed past my head. “John get down!” shouted Frank. I ducked and a grenade flew out the window. I heard shouting in German, an explosion and Nazi’s screaming, and then silence. “It was a small patrol group,” explained Frank “they’re looking for us.”
“Why did they start firing?” I asked still dazed.
“Why do you think you idiot?” Frank snapped
“How did they find us, did someone leak info?” I asked
“Yeah” he said.
“Who?” I asked.
“Don’t you think that if we knew that we wouldn’t be in this mess?”
Frank was a tall man, little gangly, with black hair and black eyes. He was strong, he was my little brother.
“Let’s check the bodies for information.” I suggested.
“Sounds like a plan” he agreed.
We went downstairs and went outside. As we searched them I heard a faint voice. One of the Nazi’s had a walkie talkie. As I picked it up I noticed the rest of the troop emerge from a nearby building.
“I can’t understand what he’s saying” I said.
“Let me see” said Johansson.
Johansson was a tall muscular man, a little awkward looking. He was here mainly because he spoke German. I handed him the radio. He translated exactly what he heard “… repeat we are coming to your location.”
“Crap, they’re coming.” said Frank.
“We gotta move now.” said Johansson.
“Okay men let’s move!” I ordered.
We walked for about five miles before we heard a Nazi counting off their march. We headed into the woods. We saw at least 100 Nazi’s march past us. We decided to keep to the woods. After about 20 miles we saw smoke.
“A crematorium.” said Johansson
“We’re close.” said Frank.
“We’ll rest for a while,” I said “get ready men; it’s going to be a hell of a night.”
We waited until dusk and then advanced. We came upon the front gate, I couldn’t read the sign since it was in German, but I heard Johansson mutter under his breath “Auswitch.” We saw the Nazi’s get the Jews into the concentration camp barracks. We waited for the last of them to get inside. Once the last one was sent inside I yelled, “NOW!!!” Then all hell broke loose. The two Nazi’s guarding the barracks went down instantly. There was more shouting in German and then tons of Nazi’s poured out of the towers.
“Disperse!” I shouted.
Frank and I charged ahead. We each had an AK-47 and were taking Nazi’s down left and right. Suddenly Frank screamed in pain. His leg was bleeding. I dragged him to cover and shouted for a medic. After about 5 minutes someone came.
“He’ll be fine, the bullet just grazed him.” He said.
Off in the distance we heard “Medic!” The medic left after wrapping up Frank’s leg.
Frank looked up and shouted “The spy!” I whirled around and saw Johansson speaking to a Nazi leader. I pulled out my talkie, “Take out Johansson.” Not two seconds later Johansson fell dead. Frank pulled a bomb out of his pack.
“Put this in the center of the main tower. . . GO!”
I ran and placed the bomb. After getting to a safe distance, I pressed the detonator.
BOOM!
The tower collapsed in on itself. Then I heard a shout “It’s over, we won!!”
I went to a speaker system I shouted “You’re free!” Someone came up and shouted it in three different languages. Thousands of Jews poured out of the barracks.
It was over.
