• Chapter One of If I Live to See Tomorrow.
"James,"Someone whispered in the darkness of the forest that surrounded me. I shuddered and wrapped my jacket tighter around me. The forest was full of whispers. It had to be the creepiest thing in this stupid town. Someone placed a hand on my shoulder and I jumped and turned around to see my friend Logan. He laughed,"You should have seen your face! Absolutely priceless!" I refrained myself from hitting him in the face and took a couple of breaths before speaking,"What are we doing out here?" Logan immediately stopped laughing and got serious. "They are giving us our assignment tonight,"He said and started walking further into the forest. "Seriously? In the middle of the night in a creepy forest full of whispers?! Why couldn't we go somewhere more open or something?"I exclaimed loudly and my voice seemed to echo in the forest. Logan turned and looked back at me freezing me where I stood with his dark grey eyes,"Stop complaining and just follow me. I want to get out of here as badly as you do." I nodded and stepped forward. He smirked and returned to walking. I followed him thinking about my ridiculous job. I was an assassin for some people who call themselves The Dark Angels. They are some really creepy people. They order me and Logan to kill certain people they want dead. We always succeed. We have never failed a job,and we have been doing this for about 5 years now. Most of the people we kill have special powers that The Dark Angels want. I never question why they want those people dead,I just do the job then cash the large check that always comes in the mail. Logan and I have special powers that help us succeed in our job. I can mess with peoples minds. When I get inside their minds I can see everything. Their past and thoughts. I can also make them here or see things that aren't there. Logan asked me to do it to him once. He ended up in an institution for a couple weeks. Apparently he had kept hearing the voices after I had made them go away. Logan has incredible strength and speed. Rumor says that he's a vampire, but we have been best friends for forever. I would have noticed his new appetite for blood. Logan suddenly stopped and looked back at me. Don't say anything. They're here. I held back my need to laugh. He was acting weird tonight, like I had forgotten how to do my job. He also seemed worried. I closed my eyes and tried to get into his mind to see what exactly was going on,but he had put up a wall in his head to stop me. I sighed and opened my eyes to find that The Dark Angels were here. There were about five of them. 2 girls and 3 guys. They all looked creepily alike. They all had the same dark brown hair with red eyes. They all had the same pale skin and the same black wings that made other people cower in fear. Logan and I were used to the black wings and the red eyes. One of the girls,Emily, walked toward me and put a photo in my hand. I didn't need to look at it to know it was a photo, they always gave us a photo of the person we were supposed to kill. Emily walked back to the group and a guy,Isaiah, walked toward us. "The girls name is Isabella. She is like us,an angel. She is a Light Angel though. Her wings haven't appeared yet and probably won't for another 2 years, but she won't be alive that long will she?" "No,Sir,"I said and looked down at the photo of Isabella. She was very beautiful. She had fair skin with freckles dotting her nose and cheeks. She had long silky looking blonde hair with blue green eyes that seemed to have gold flecks in them. In the picture she was wearing a white long sleeve shirt with dark jeans and what appeared to be black converses. She was skinny and appeared to be very short. She already looked like an angel, all she needed was her wings. "She's the last of the Light Angels. She'll mess up our plans,so you need to kill her,"Isaiah said. Logan and I nodded and started out of the forest. I handed the picture to Logan and he studied it awhile before giving it back to me. "She's so beautiful. Shame we have to kill her,"Logan said in a cold voice as I put the picture in my back pocket. I nodded, and didn't say anything back. After we were out of the forest I looked toward the sky as the sun started to rise. "Where do we have to go to find her?"Logan asked me as we walked toward the airport. I took the photo back out of my pocket and looked at the back. In messy handwriting it said Harper Creek High School in Michigan. I showed it to Logan and he nodded,"Michigan here we come."
