The breath came out in a series of soft puffs and gasps, visible upon the air although the temperature was far above the freezing range. A slender hand pressed against the wall, the girl peering around the corner of the building only to see a small group of men that seemed to be searching. When a flashlight hit her face immediately turned back, heart racing, chest lifting and falling at the same pace, closing bright eyes. ”They saw you…” “You must hurry away from here.” “They’re coming!” “Run!” The last word from the unseen figures made her eyes snap open, turning on her heel and hurrying through the alleyway just as a man shouted. “There she is!” The call was announced to the small group that followed him and away they went after her, heavy boots slapping against concrete, in contrast to the bare feet of the female that ran ahead of them only by a short distance. Grabbing to a corner of a building she used it to help her turn around it, stumbling only for a moment while she leapt over fallen garbage cans and bums that slept in the cold. But it was all becoming too much, she wasn’t fast, her thin figure wasn’t toned with muscles that showed she was a runner, she was a thin lanky girl who tried to avoid the outside as much as possible. That was the explanation she chose when her legs suddenly gave way and she crumbled to the ground, panting, shaking, muscles aching while she grabbed the gravel that cut into her knees.

“Knew you couldn’t run forever you little b***h..”

The words caused her to turn her head, staring at the group of the men that had come to a stop behind her, staring with grins, a few throwing in laughter. “Now you’re going to pay for what you did,” the largest in the center stated, his grin something that would haunt her nightmares in years to come, if they did continue after this meeting that is.. He stepped closer and she shuffled back, “I didn’t do anything..” Her voice was quivering as she pleaded her innocence, breath still visible on the air, yet only she felt the chill. “You killed innocent families!” he snapped, grabbing her jaw and holding her head in place. Fingers gripped at the wrist, nails digging into flesh while pain flashed through her. “I didn’t,” she sobbed, “I swear to god it wasn’t me!”

He threw her to the ground and she scrambled back, holding her jaw with teary eyes and flushed cheeks. “Then who did?” he demanded, watching while her eyes turned downward. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you…” Her answer wasn’t enough, obviously, for he stepped to her and slammed a booted foot into her stomach. The air rushed from her lips while she curled in, a cry of pain sounding from her lips while body trembled in pain. “T-they won’t like you doing that..” she whimpered. He snarled and lifted the pipe in his hand, ready to strike down on her and take the law into his own hands. But as he tried to swing the bar down it refused to budge, as if something held onto the end, causing the man to cast his gaze up. “What the hell is this?” he demanded, watching then as the female shifted back away from him, “I told you… they didn’t like you hurting me..” “What? Who didn’t?!” His demand was cut short, the bar tugged sharply from his hands, causing him to stumbled before backing up. “What the ******** is this?” The bar seemed to be floating on air, lifting up and down, as if someone was gripping it and tapping it in their palm over and over. Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, the bar swung and hit the man in his jaw, sending him flying back. Her hands went to her mouth in shock, seeing what they couldn’t watching as the broken and deformed man held the bar in his hand like a bat and stepped closer. Her eyes shifted to another figure that would only appear before her, a female that sat upon one of the men’s shoulders, grabbing his mouth and pulling his head back. Her fist shoved down his throat, choking him from the inside, eyes wide, unable to see what was really happening. From all corners of the alleyway she watched as the invisible spirits - all that seemed to have a need to take care of her, move from corners and to those who’s intent was to hurt her. She watched while bodies were torn limb by limb, the screams echoing, her pleas falling on deaf ears as the creatures continued to tear them apart.

When everything fell silent she sat on her knees, hands pressed to the concrete, staring at the blood that splattered the walls and ground, shaking. “W-why me?” she whimpered, staring at the spirit that stepped to her, running bloody fingers down her cheek and to her chin, staining porcelain skin with the red. The sounds of footsteps caught her attention, a strangely dressed man stepping out with a shocked look on his face. She shifted back some and he held up his hands, “no no no, I’m not going to do anything.. I just want to know how.. How did you do that?” She held up a hand and before he could grab it to help her up, it seemed something else did, one of the many spirits around her. “I didn’t,” she corrected, “they did.” “Who?” he questioned. It was then that she explained herself, the fact she could see and speak with those that had passed, the spirits that yearned to keep her safe, that they protected her from danger and with that protection came danger, the creatures having killed a group of men that had attacked her.

“Then I would like to make a proposition with you….”

“Give me your hands..”

The female’s voice still sounded as soft and sweet as it had five years back, but her looks were just a bit different. Her body had become taller, shaping perfectly, skin remaining pale and dark hair never once cut. A red sash was pulled over her eyes, keeping her from seeing the hoards of ghosts that had heard of her and come to seek help. An elder woman pressed her hands into the girl’s, staring at the pale face and painted lips, watching them turn into a faint smile. “Your son..” she spoke softly, “he wants you to know it wasn’t your fault..” The woman’s lips were parted, tears welling in her eyes, “oh god…” Her hands were pulled away to hold against her mouth, keeping herself from crying while she watched the female before her remove the blindfold. White eyes cast down to her side, smiling faintly while her hand seemed to touch a face of a child, “he’s beautiful…” she commented. The woman was sobbing softly, “oh Alex… I miss you so much..” “He misses you too… but, he says that you need to forgive yourself. That it wasn’t your fault. That you need to let him go.” The woman shook her head, “No, I can’t lose my baby!” The girl reached out, grabbing the other’s hands, gripping them. “If you don’t, he’ll forever be stuck on earth.. You must let him pass on…”

The woman stood to her feet, “I paid to speak to my son, not to have someone force me to forget him..” She turned quickly and stormed out of the tent, white eyes staring at the boy who bowed his head and followed after the woman. Rubbing her eyes she shook her head, blocking out the shouts of the many being around her, looking up only when the man - who hired her for his circus act - stepped in, arms folded to his chest. “Mai! What have I told you.. Just tell them what they want and let them go. You can’t save every soul,” he stated sharply. She pulled the sash over her eyes and shook her head, “it’s not fair.. I can’t just sit and let them suffer…” A cold hand touched her shoulder, her eyes looking up to the being that was the last of the few that protected her. His body was twice the size of a normal man’s, bullet holes covered his body from head to toe, but he seemed all too gentle with her, as if she were his only reason to live. The man scoffed, fixing the hat atop his head, “Here comes another Mai, don’t screw this one up..” he snapped.

Exiting the tent he left her to be, tuning out the shouts and screams of the spirits, listening only to the rustle of the flap that led into the small cloth building. “Have a seat please..” she murmured, listening as the figure sat, holding out her hands. “Please, give me your hands.”
