Tonight was the first Bush Choir concert of the year. I'm in Intermediate Choir, which is the 7th graders who rock & the 8th graders who suck eggs. We sung Cantate Hodie, Castle on a Cloud from "Les Miserables," and Sarasponda. We were pretty much awesome.
The 6th grade choir is called the Beginning Choir. They were pretty decent, but last year when I was in it, we were better. Anyway, the 6th graders sung the Captain's Mate am I, O Music, and a Spanish song called A la Puerta del Cielo. My favorite song that they sung was O Music because it had 2 harmony parts. It was also a round song, and the 6th graders didn't manage to mess it up. I totally wouldn't mind hearing it again.
After the Beginning Choir went up, it was our turn. The Intermediate Girls Choir is required to wear matching gaurnet dresses, hemmed exactly 1" above the ground. We wear small stud earrings and those of us with ponytails tie a ribbon in our hair. We wear black pantiehose from HELL, they're so uncomfortable, and black shoes, no laces, no more than a 1" heel.
First we sung Cantate Hodie. It's a Latin piece, so we didn't anunciate the 'h' like normal. In reality, it was more like we were singing "Cantate odie, cantate odie." It's a semi- fast piece and sort of bouncy. I'm an Alto, so I have the lower part. It was much easier than the Soprano part, let me tell you.
After Cantate, we sung Castle on a Cloud. It's a slow, mournful song about a sad little girl. Her mom died and her dad left her with this family who makes her do everything for them. It's pretty sad because she's convincing herself that her life is better than it really is. She's singing about her castle she goes to in her dreams.
Did I mention she's supposedly my age?
So, yeah. Castle is hard to sing because the Alto part gets higher than the Soprano part sometimes. It's hard to sing that high because we have to do an octive and a little higher in one phrase.
Castle is fun to sing because you get to be a total drama queen with your voice stress and it's easy to hit the correct notes except for high La. It's a semi-fun song regardless of the story behind it.
Finally, we sung Sarasponda. Sarasponda was probably my favorite piece we sung. It starts off playful and bouncy. Then we split into the harmony parts. The piano slows to a mournful tempo and goes to a minor key. To be honest, it sounds like the person playing's cat just shot itself in the head. We have to sing long phrases, but again, total drama queen voices. At "Ah Do-ray oh," we cresendo from a level 1 to a level 10 on the Singing Sound-O-Meter. It's a lot of fun to do, even if it strains your voice a little.
Then it gets to the waltz section. Waltz is easy to go with. I had to stop myself from swaying a couple of times. And durring the Soprano solo, I had to nudge Jaimie to remind her not to sing. All in all, waltz was a piece of cake.
Now for the finale. The tempo speeds up drastically and we go back to playful. But now it's more like playful hyperness of DOOM. Alto and Soprano have entirely different parts, and if you aren't paying attention, you get lost.
I got lost once.
Then, at the very end, we go from 1 to 10,000 from "Ah say pah say" to "ah say pah say oh" a few measures later. Durring the final measure we said "Ah say pah say oh" in such a low whisper, I couldn't even hear it. And I was one of the people singing it.
The applause was deafening.
Then the Boys Chorus got on stage. The Boys Chorus is all the boys in 7th and 8th grade choir. They sung Drill Ye Terriors, April is in My Mistress' Face, and 'Til the Walls Come Down. I liked all three pieces, but my favorite would have to be 'Til the Walls Come Down because it was all about confiedence and joining together.
Plus the soloists were sorta cute. 4laugh
Then the Advanced Girls Choir came on. In order to be part of the Advanced Girls Choir, you have to be able to sight read easily, sing well, and all this other stuff. They sung There is Sweet Music Here, Vere Languores Nostros, and Jordan's Angels. My favorite song that they sung would definatly be Jordan's Angels because it talks about what's going to happen when we die.
"Look over the Jordan, what do I see?/ A herd of angels coming for me/ Gabriel blowing his horn/ Daniel playing the harp/ One day my soul will be free"
So, yeah. The Advanced Girls kicked butt. So what? I'm going to be one next year.
Right now I'm just about whooped. I'm about to fall asleep. In my next journal entry, which I hope to have tomorrow, I'll have more concert stuff and pictures. I might have video too. Who really knows?
Your Lord and Master,
Lois
