Perspective
My perfect life, shattered in seconds. Everything I had worked for, everything I had. My name is Julia Rose Murphy, this is my story, and this is my perspective.
Julia
Chapter 1
“Come on Julia! We’re going to be late!”
I laughed, “Alright, alright! I’m coming!” I yell down to Rene as I put the finishing touches on my makeup. Everything had to be perfect. I mean it was my senior prom! I stepped back to look at myself. I had to admit, I didn’t look half bad. My usually frizzy hair was now in silky ringlets, my makeup, was just right, mascara, eye liner, a touch of blush and my lips a deep red to go with my long red dress. I turned around; it clung to exactly the right places.
“JULIA!” Rene’s voice brought me back.
“Coming!” I yelled down to my friends as I grabbed my clutch and ran down the stairs to my waiting friends.
“Finally! Come on! Let’s go!” Rene says as she drags me out of the house.
“Bye mom!” I yell as I am dragged out the door.
“Yeesh! I thought we would never leave!” Rene grumbles. I just giggle.
“Hey, who’s driving?” I ask
“Me of course!” Tanya buts in.
“Shotgun!” I yell as I run to the car, racing my friends laughing the whole way
“Fine but I get it on the way home!” yells mina.
Mina was one of my closest friends. We had been that way since we were babies. We were just like sisters. And we were. When we were in 5th grade we found out her mom had cancer. When her father heard it he left. Just up and left. Her mom was devastated. The cancer had progressed too quickly, she ended up dying. Mina didn’t want to go into a foster care so we adopted her. We have been even closer since then.
“Yeah ok, we’ll see about that!” I retort back at mina with a grin.
We both laugh.
“We all set?” Tanya asks
“Yes! Let’s go!” Rene says impatiently
“Ok! And we’re off!” Tanya says laughing. We all chatter about what we think it will be like, who will show up with who.
“Are we there yet?” Mina asks
“Almos-”
Then everything went black.
Chapter 2
Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep
Wha? What’s going on? Where am I? Why can’t I open my eyes? I try to say something but nothing comes out, my mouth doesn’t even move. I try and move my arm, my legs, nothing! I can’t move at all! Then I hear a voice.
“Just terrible! At such a young age too!” the voice says
Hey! I know that voice! MOM! I try and call out to her but it’s the same thing, nothing comes out. Then a door opens. I hear footsteps coming closer.
“Jules?”
Mike? Oh Mike! What’s going on!
“Can you hear me?” He asks
YES! YES! YES!
“I doubt it son.” Says a strange voice
Who is that? I don’t know that voice
“Are you sure?” Mike asks
“We are pretty sure. Julia is in a coma. She is still alive but she cannot respond to anything. She still may wake up but nothing is certain.” The strange voice finishes.
What? I’m in a…a…a…COMA! No, it can’t be! People in comas can’t hear anything! I can’t be in a coma! I just can’t be!
“Is there anything I can do?” Mike asks, his voice laced with pain
Oh mike! You always worried about me! I’m ok, really! Don’t worry! Poor mike, he always tried his best to keep me safe, he must be beating himself up since he wanted to drive me to prom.
“There is not much anyone can do at this point. All we can do medically is to monitor her condition. I’m sorry son.”
I hear foot steps and the door open and close.
“Jules?” Mike asks using his pet name for me “Can you hear me? If you can I just want you to know, I’m here, I’m not going to leave you. I love you.” His voice cracks at the end
Oh mike! I love you too!
He takes my hand and starts talking but I can’t concentrate on him, I’m just so tired…
Mike
Chapter 3
“You look good. The doctors said your going to be just fine but only if you don’t give up, you have to fight to get better and I know you will, and you know that I will always be here for you.” I finish. The door opens.
“Mike?” Julia's mom steps in.
“Would you mind if I could have a few minutes alone with her?” she asks
“Oh, of course Mrs. Murphy.” I say as I get up and I kiss Julia on the forehead.
“Thanks." she says
I walk out of the room and hear the door click. Not knowing where to go I shove my hands in my pockets and start walking down the hall, out the door and around the building until I find a bench. I sit down and then everything hits me at once.
Julia's in a coma.
She might not wake up.
I can’t do anything to stop it.
She might die.
I start crying. I can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it. I continue crying for a while and then the longer I sit there the madder I get. This doesn’t happen to me! This kind of stuff only happens to other people! Julia didn’t deserve this! “Damn It!” I yell. I get up and start pacing. Then I look at my watch. 1:00 a.m. I’ve been gone for almost an hour. I should get back to Julia. Then my cell rings.
“Hello?”
“Dude! What happened to you! You answered your phone and then you went white as a sheet! What happened! Why’d you run out?”
Josh, of course! I should have called him earlier. He's like a brother to Julia
“Yeah sorry bout that. Umm you should probably sit down.” I warn him
“I’m fine tell me” he says
“Its Julia” I say
“What happened!” he answers with panic
“She was on her way to the prom and they got hit by a drunk driver, he hit the passenger seat. Where Julia was sitting, she’s in a coma.” I finish, my voice cracking.
“No, no.”
Dead air
“I’m sorry. I know what she meant to you.” Josh says quietly
“Meant, MEANT! SHES NOT DEAD YET JOSH!” I exploded
“I meant means, what she means to you!” Josh stutters
“Yeah, yeah, I know, I sorry, I shouldn’t have exploded like that.” I say
“C…can I come and see her?”
“Yeah of course, I’m at the Bethlehem.”
“I’m on my way”
And he hangs up.
I start walking back, when I get back to the waiting room it was exactly as I had left it. I really didn’t want to be around people so I just walked back to Julia's room and prayed for a miracle.
Chapter 4
My cell rings again, Mom. Great
“Hello?”
“Michael! Where are you! It is almost 2 ‘o-clock in the morning!”
“Mom! Calm down.”
“Calm down? CALM DOWN! How can you expect me to calm down when-”
“MOM! SHUT UP!” I say “Just listen ok? Let me explain.”
“O-ok.” She says. I take a deep breath and then start
“Its Julia mom, she” my voice cracked. “She’s in the hospital.”
“What?” she breaths
“The girls were driving to the hall and a drunk driver hit the passenger side, where Julia was, she’s in a coma mom.”
“Oh my god mike, I’m so sorry.”
“Its ok mom.” I say
“I’m coming down.” She said “where is she?”
“Bethlehem.”
“I’ll be right there.” She says and hangs up. Great now I have to deal with her too? I turn to Julia. She looks so peaceful, like she’s just sleeping. The door opens
“Mike?” Josh whispers. I turn around
“Hey, thanks for coming.” I say
“How is she?” he asks
“No change.” I say
There are no words I can think of to say and I’m guessing he’s thinking the same thing so he just pulls up another chair and sits down next to me.
“Mike, you should get some sleep, you look like crap.” Josh finally says
“Naw, I’m good.” I say. I really do need to sleep but I don’t want to leave Julia.
“No, I’m serious, you should see yourself. I’ll stay with her. Just go take a nap. Do you really think Julia wants you –”
“Leave her out of this.” I say
“I’m sorry but I’m just sayin-”
“Yeah yeah I know, I’ll go take a nap.” I walk out the door and find an empty couch and lay down. And I get my much needed sleep.
