    - This is from the point of view of an orphan around 9 years old in old London -

That night was the first night I saw him. I was huddled in an ally, tucked into the furthest corner and doing my best to keep myself warm on this freezing yet dry night, though the cold stonewalls weren’t helping. As I huddled a little more into the corner, trying to get some sleep, I herd something that made my heart race. Foot steps, the footsteps of shiny shoes. I lept up and prayed that it wasn’t the cops coming to get me; I couldn’t help it that I was an orphan. But then as he came out of the smoke of the ally, I noticed that it certainly wasn’t the cops. The man did indeed have shiny shoes, black shiny shoes, but he was also mostly in white. He wore a white jacket and white trousers, with a white tie. On his head of black hair, sat a white fedora with a black band round it that was tipped over his eyes. Only his shirt was a sky blue and his shoes, black. He paused for a moment and tipped his hat up, noticing me. He then turned, reached out a hand to the backdoor and knocked once. The door clicked open and he glanced over at me. A smile flicked on his lips for a moment, and then he tipped his white hat back over his eyes and disappeared through the door.
Now, I happened to know that there was in fact a very small window with bars covering it, which looked into wherever he had entered. I was now curious, I had never actually looked through the window, and I could just see it from where I was huddled. Cautiously, I climbed onto the empty damp crates that sat there, and gripping the bars tightly, I peered into the room. It was first apparent that it was a warehouse, which had been turned into some sort of nightclub. People sat and stood all around, women and men, wearing fanciful cloths. The man I had saw a moment ago, was standing in the door way, very still and I then suddenly realized that every pair of eyes were fixed on him, and all they’re expressions were ether hostile or wary. Why were they like this? The man stood there for a moment, then I saw his hand slip into his coat. Instantly, around 30 gun caps were clicked. The man in white paused, his hand lingering inside his jacket for a moment longer, but then pulled it back out, producing nothing. His eyes were flickering cautiously from one person to another. Making very small, cautious movements, the man in white then walked over to a small bar that was tucked into the corner. The bar tender regarded him very carefully and he eyed him up and down. The man in white muttered something, and after a few minuets, the bartender reluctantly got out a shot glass and laid it on the counter. That one noise of the glass connecting with the table made an awful lot of noise in that silence. The bartender then filled the glass with whisky and the man in white immediately downed it then turned to run his eyes over the crowd once more, leaning his elbow on the counter as he did so. Know one attempted to move. He was like a dove in the middle of a large circle of cats, ether that, or they were the doves, it was hard to tell.
Just then, a portly man separated himself from the crowd and the man in white walked to him.
“Why have you come?” the portly man asked. The man in white looked at him calmly.
“You know why.” He said. There was a brief pause, than he continued “Listen, I’m only going to give you one last chance. My men have surrounded the building, and if you don’t do as I say, well… this little hideout of yours will be history.” The portly man recoiled. “Now,” the man in white said, “hand it over.” The portly man stared wide-eyed at him for a moment, but then scowled.
“No.” he said stubbornly. “Your bluffing, I can tell. I’m not going to fall for that old rubbish.”
“Very well.” The man in white said, nodding.
There was suddenly a noise from above, and the man in white’s eyes immediately flashed to the big frosted glass windows at the top of the warehouse. He then immediately, tipped his hat back over his eyes, and, pushing past the portly man, swiftly pushed his way into the crowd and almost disappearing from view. The crowd all seemed to bristle, gun caps were clicking off everywhere in an instant and they began to close in on him - They meant to kill him! I followed to where his gaze had just been and I could see a silloet of someone behind the glass. Suddenly, there was a fire of gunshots, and the glass pains shattered. Glass rained down as People began screaming and shouting. I froze. What was going on? I searched for the man in white, but I couldn’t see him. You might of thought that white would stand out between all those other people in duller colors, but no, he was knower to be seen.
This was all I got to see, because just then, a gloved hand clamped down on my mouth and I was hauled down from where I was standing. I tried to scream, but it was muffled by the gloved hand. My eyes were wild as I started to get dragged away. I glanced up at whoever it was, and cursed myself silently. It was a cop, I shouldn’t of let my guard down so easily. In that minuet, as the cop made his way down the alleyway, me in his grasp, I saw the briefest flash of white in front of me, a sort of, clubbing sound coming from behind and then a grunt from the cop, who instantly let go of me and fell back. I spun and looked down at the unconscious policeman lying on the ground, then my eyes slowly drifted up to whomever it was who had done this. The man in white was standing over him. He took a step towards me “you’ve gotta get out of here“ He whispered, I stared at him and began to feel my legs quiver, whether with the cold or fright, it was hard to tell. “Trust me.” He said, flashing a glance to the warehouse door. I stood frozen to the spot, fear overcoming me. I suddenly flinched from the sound of shattering glass coming from inside, and just then, a couple of policemen burst out the door into the ally. The man stared at them furtively, then grit his teeth and without warning, he picked me up and dashed past them out the ally. I tried to stop myself from screaming.
“What are you doing?” I hissed as he ran “I thought those were your cops.” He glanced down at me, still racing down the street. There was know one about to see us, it was too late for pedestrians.
“You herd all that?” he asked, I didn’t reply. In the end, he just shook his head, a faint smile appearing on his face. “No, they weren’t mine, that was a bluff, I didn’t even know that they would be here. It was just lucky, I suppose, that they were.”
“Lucky?” I echoed, but he didn’t reply, he was glancing over his shoulder. I glanced over too, and realized that the coppers were still chasing us.
“Stop!” I herd one of them yell, but the man did no such thing. The man suddenly picked up the pace, pelting down the street. Suddenly he took a sharp turn, and darted into one of the various dark alleys, but then came to a stop as he realized that it was a dead end. We herd the pounding cop’s footsteps nearing and with a huff of irritation, that man pushed us both into a doorway. I didn’t need to be shushed as he stood there silently, holding his breath.
“He went down there!” I herd one of the coppers yell. They pelted into the ally, but then came to a halt, a couple of steps before the doorway we were in.
“You idiot!” another copper cried. “You done it, again! This is the third time ya’know. I wonder why the boss don’t just fire you the first time you done it.”
“Yeah, but,” the first cried, “I swear I saw him turn off here, I swear!”
“Yeah, that’s what you always say, and are they here? No, they never are!” their voices died as they made their way back out the ally and into the street. I waited until I thought it was safe to speak.
“Why were they chasing you?” I whispered. The man’s breathing steadied as he looked down at me.
“I’ve got something they want.” He muttered.
“Oh,” I whispered, “that thing you were asking that other guy to hand over? But then, how did you get it? You didn’t even know where it was.” He smiled slightly
“I gave an educated guess. If I hadn’t of got too it first the cops would have got it, then I really wouldn’t have been able to get it back.” I paused.
“What is it?” I asked. The man’s smile widened and he winked.
“It’s a secret.” He muttered. He then looked up, glanced down the alleyway, then back to me.
“You’re an orphan, right? Do you know your way around these parts?” he asked, I nodded, answering both his questions. “Right.” He muttered, and put me down. I was used to the floor by now, the coldness of it on my bare feet. I looked up at him
“Thank you,” I muttered, “for saving me”. He smiled, then glanced down at my tattered rags and shrugged of his white jacket. Before I knew it, the man had wrapped the jacket around me, the warmth was amazing. I grinned at him. “Thank you.” I repeated. He nodded, tipped his hat over his eyes and swiftly disappeared into the night
