Window Pane
By Krista Clifton
It was a night like any other. The rain poured down, pounding on the window. Nothing could be heard except a woman yelling in the distance.
"Your always like this!", she shrieked, tears rolling down her cheeks.
He shrugs his shoulders and acts as if she hadn't even spoken. He turns on the television and flips through the channels looking for one to land on.
"Are you even listening!?", she stands in front of his view of the television.
He looks up with a glossy stare and replies," what?".
"Never mind", she says feeling defeated, choking on her own tears. She sinks into the other corner of the sofa. The only thing to be heard now is the rain on the window pane, the television, and the nearly silent sniffles coming from the young girl.
"Ha! Did you just see what happened!", he exclaimed nudging the young woman . She shrugs him off and plays with the ring on her finger. He stares at her then pushes her," what's wrong with you?!". She looks down at his left and right hands.
"Nothing, my darling, nothing is wrong.", she said sinking back lower into the sofa.
"Good, then get me a beer and make me something to eat!", he smiles at her as she gets up. The clock chimes 12 times as she makes her way to the kitchen. "Make it quick, babe", he calls out to her, "it's getting late!"
She begins prepping the meal. While the meat is cooking, she takes a bottle out of the fridge, pops the lid off, and exits the kitchen to give it to him. One two three four, minutes pass by before she returns to the kitchen. The meat is burning as she renters the kitchen with the root beer bottle still in her hand. She tosses the bottle into the kitchen and falls to the floor in tears. She stands up as she hears the television shut off. She turns to the stove and moves the already burnt meat against the sizzling pan.
"On second thought, Princess, I don't feel so great. I'm just going to go to sleep. Cleanup quickly and come to bed. You know I can't sleep unless my angel is near!"
He exits the kitchen as swiftly as he came. She throws the already chard meat into the trash and proceeds to clean her mess. She makes her way to the room. Once the room proceeds to remove her clothes and replaces it with a nightgown. She then stares into the vanity mirror, removing her makeup with a cloth, and then finally places her ring on the solid wood surface. Then she climbs into the bed and stares at the ceiling.
"Good morning" she says while yawning and stretching her arms over her head. She looks over, but no one is there. She gets up and proceeds to start her day. The perfect outfit, the perfect hair, the perfect shoes, and the perfect makeup is essential. She places foundation on down her neck, down her arms, and around her legs.
She lets out a sigh" I have to be his perfect little princess."
All anyone could hear was the rain hitting the window pane.
