    The NYPD was Established in 1844. around the time, the population of NYC
    was 320,000. They were served by an archaic force comprised of one night watch,100 city marshals, 31 constables, and 51 cops. Peter Cooper, at the request of the Common Council, thought up a proposal to create a Police Department of 1,200 Officers. John Watts De Peyster was an Early Advocate of implementing military style discipline and organization to the department. The New York State Government approved the proposal which authorized the creation of the NYPD on May 7th, 1844. On the same day, the removal of the New York City Nightwatch was approved.
    Throughout the years, the NYPD has been involved with a load of riots in
    NYC. In July 1863, the New York State Militias were gone to help Union troops,
    when the 1863 Draft Riots broke out, leaving the cops, who were outnumbered to
    stop the riots. The Tompkins Square Riot happened on January 13, 1874 when
    cops crushed a demonstration involving thousands of Jobless Citizens in
    Tompkins Square Park.

    NYPD History: 1900's


    Around the beginning of 1900, The NYPD began to professionalize under the leadership of Soon-To-Be-President Theodore Roosevelt. The NYPD began to Emphasize training, and took advantage of Modern Technology such as Fingerprinting. In 1911, the NYPD took advantage of another innovation, the motorcycle, also known as the Police Bike.
    In the 1900s, the title of Policewoman was created. In response, Women became cops across the USA. Today, half of the NYPD consists of Policewomen.
    In the 1990s, under mayor Giuliani, the NYPD witnessed a large decrease in crime rates in the city, which was responsible for the NYPD's employment of COMPSTAT under Bill Bratton, and the end of the crack cocaine epidemic.

    NYPD History: 2000-present day


    On 11 September 2001, 9 Patrol Officers and 14 ESU Officers were killed when the WTC towers collapsed.There were more deaths in 2001 than any other year in history. Ever Since the terrorist attacks that day, the NYPD formed the Counter-Terrorism Unit.
    Today the NYPD currently has 34,500 officers. The Current Commissioner is Raymond Kelly. The Requirements to join the NYPD are: you must be a US citizen, be 21 yrs. old, have 60 college credits+ a 2.0 GPA or 2 yrs. Military Service, have a valid Driver's License, without Restrictions, not have been arrested,and be a resident of NYC, and surrounding areas.
