• Light streak, brown flash,
    Quickly past, a swift dash.
    Blind beast, defiant air,
    Shining eyes, whipping hair.

    Restless cry, unlatched door,
    Trenches dug upon the floor.
    Escaping slyly, none suspect,
    A simple second of neglect.

    Fluttering hooves, ringing neigh,
    Flinging head, as horses may.
    Screaming voice, pounding breath,
No words are there to this express.

The day was young, the horse was old,
Tamed from birth, but she was bold.
It was not a man that would make her stop,
Only a broken bone could make her drop.

A hole unseen, a breathless fall,
A rending snap proclaimed it all.
    Sweating skin, a heaving side,
    Comfort we could not provide.

We could not let her die in pain,
A needle inserted into her vein.
Gasping for air, she could not be saved,
Years of life this accident shaved.
