The faint blush of red
Was the beginning
That would be remembered in the many years to come
Red were the hearts that beat with the fire of passion
The first meeting of two young and foolish people
The touching of hands alike
But so different
The torches of the night
Showed the love for each other
Forbidden was the meeting in the orchard of roses
The maiden as radiant as the blazing sun
So abashed to hear her thoughts stumbled upon
By a guest, unwelcome to property of the enemy
Rushing into a marriage
Looked down upon by two families at war
An angry cousin who seeks them out
Draws against the man so blinded by love
And the urge to protect a will to be with the young wife
Blood now smeared on the hands
Of the one so quick to love
And too slow to learn
Flees from the city that banished him
For all eternity
The young heart who once loved
Now broken and longing for the one who was banished
Until then, shall the fiery burn of the sleeping potion
Protect her from the dreaded future planned
The servant who knew of the funeral
For the fair maiden whose cheeks
Were pale as if they had never seen sun,
Told the heart broken man of her dark death
As he hurried to find the poison
To stop a heart and burn the blood
She started to stir from a sleep
That seemed to never end
He blesses the body that used to be
Fair as a rose
Now pale as death
Poison overtakes as burgundy eyes open
And a cry of pain fill the silence
The hand of death rises up and grips the knife
And plunges into flesh
As her blood spreads over both star-crossed lovers
Now united by a force greater than any of us
The grief of this story
Shared by the two rival families
Is now told over again
And never fails to be a classic of love, blood and war, and death
