The brilliance of the eye
Is something to testify
Of a callous hand cold
Gripping me from the fold
Because her tongue
Has got me by the heart
And if the good really do die young
It’s the reason I got past the start
I am king of a card castle built on sand
So maybe you will understand
Why I burnt every bridge coming to this forsaken
Hell you call a beach
Lonely and overcrowded
‘Til this last life is taken
‘Tis not no life the defeat of loneliness?
But the tide’s coming to wash away this sin
Then I’d be well out of the reach
Of anyone and anything that can look past the sun
But not pluck out my sting
And no, you don’t know what I mean
And let me ask you one question
Are you better than me?

Description:
Extremely dark, this poem is written from the perspective of a major character in a book I'm writing. He is speaking some to the main character, some his own black thoughts, and is incredibly alone and depressed. The final question is what he asks before he dies.
I wrote some of the poem, then realized how well "if the good really do die young, it's the reason I got past the start" fit this character for a motto, and finished it. - Date: 07/03/2009
