    That first snow
    leaves the forest
    a virgin void
    of any tracks
    like that new
    bathroom wall
    before the vandal
    scrawled
    “I was here.”

    But there is
    in every animal
    a bit of the barbarianl
    for later the rabbit
    writes he too was here
    just as the deer
    proudly proclaims
    “Just passing through,”
    and what’s that?
    A timber wolf track
    amongst the others;
    the entire saga
    of Nature thus
    revealed.
