H.P. Lovecraft believed that the downfall of man would arise from the advancement of sciences into realms in which they are not welcomed. And to that point, I must disagree. The advancement of the sciences have allowed the survival of mankind and promoted us to the Gods of our domain. The vast plains of the world, once covered in grass, hills, dirt, and trees now are filled with our domiciles and a rubberized material made to drive our multi-tonne metal movers which receive their power from the liquidized dead life forms which walked the Earth several aeons ago. We genetically modify both animals and plants by rewriting the basic codes of life using germs and gold particles so we can sustain ourselves. Our technology has advanced to the point where we can far surpass our natural lifespans.
The downfall of humanity will not occur from the advancements of scientists, rather the toils of the sciences will be the saviors of humanity as they have been before. The bright minds of early scientists ushered mankind from an animal in the muck, striving to survive against the forces of nature, where a storm or a rogue animal could spell death for most, to the master of the natural world. There is no animal on Earth that can threaten a human who has prepared himself using the weapons technologies developed by many generations and civilizations research. And now we have the powers to vaccinate ourselves from diseases, survive horrible trauma, and transplant the heart valves from other animals to ourselves. No matter what happens to us, there is no stopping the human race.
As such a powerful race, the truest of apex predators, what do we have to fear? There is no doubt that we shall soon develop newer more powerful technologies to combat all sorts of plagues and astral calamities. The end of humanity will not be the greatest minds of science traversing into the unknown, as they are those who protect us from the outside world. The world that is far away from our house, on our life filled planet, orbiting around our average sun, in our spiral galaxy, in our cosmos. Far away from where we settle down and make our stand, and thus far nothing seems to be able to challenge our peaceful existence. For as long as we do not overtake each other, we remain the masters of existence on Earth and, for now at least, the galaxy.

This sounds like high-school essay written the night before it was due in your English/Philosophy class.
