They say her last words were "I love you"
They say she didn't suffer long
They say she died of a broken heart
And they say she's gone
But what they say are lies
What they say is wrong
What they speak is ignorance
I know what really went on
It's true she died lonely
With a broken heart nothing could soothe
She died from not heartache
But of a bloody bullet wound
I was there when it happened
She leveled the gun to her head
I watched her pull the trigger
I saw her fall limp and dead
Her last words were not "I love you"
As so many like to say
They weren't general affection
Instead they were my name
She called out for me softly
As the light left her eyes
She called out as softly
As a normal person sighs
I was sad for her death
Saddened by the loss of life
It reminded me of the day
Mine was taken by a knife
I watched for a moment
As he blood trickled away
I would tell someone if I could
But I had no words to say
Instead I stood and waited
I stood and stared
I waited there until
I felt a shift in the air
I smiled kindly as I turned
I saw her pretty face
I touched her lips in love
As I whispered to her, "Grace?"

- Description: A short poem I wrote telling the story of a couple. It's a bit dark for my usual style, however I wanted to write it. Written a few months ago shortly after rereading my favorite poem: "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes
